Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: June 2012
http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012_06_01_archive.html
Tuesday, 26 June 2012. Slow times in wet weather. Unfortunately, I hate rain in the summer. I'm rather disappointed I'm still walking around in my wellies and it is almost the end of June! The rain equals less to blog! Dragonfly spotting is hard work as sunny periods on days off seem to be few and far between. The highlight of the last week or so being this Four-spotted Chaser of the scarce form. Like everyone else, I hope the weather picks up soon. Links to this post. Saturday, 9 June 2012. Fortunately,...

Natur-al-Andalus: The Spotted Hyaena
http://naturalandalus.blogspot.com/2013/06/the-spotted-hyaena.html
A portrait of a little piece of Africa in Europe. Friday, June 21, 2013. The Spotted Hyaena Crocuta crocuta. Was the commonest carnivore outside Gorham's and Vanguard Caves between 60 and 20 kyr. Some of the specimens were huge, much larger than any cousin that you could fine today in Africa. Some palaeontologists define these as cave hyaenas C.c.spelaea. Posted by Clive Finlayson. http://naturalandalus.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
A portrait of a little piece of Africa in Europe. Sunday, April 24, 2011. In a colony of egrets. Among the spectacular sights of southern Iberia in the spring is a colony of nesting egrets. Stewart went on a mission to capture the beauty and elegance of the Cattle Egret. In full breeding plumage. He caught up with them in a colony on white poplars. The photographs speak for themselves. A portrait of a little piece of Africa in Europe. Monday, June 24, 2013. The plains outside Gorham's Cave attracted many scavengers who were always ready to take the opportunity of a carnivore kill or the remains of animals left by the Neanderthals. Natur-al-Andalus: February 2011
http://naturalandalus.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
A portrait of a little piece of Africa in Europe. Friday, February 18, 2011. Of Eagles, Rabbits and Partidges. It is quite remarkable how we often observe the world around us without fully appreciating the depth of time that we are observing. Three species are currently staging a "cat-and-mouse" saga that goes back to the Pleistocene. The game is at least 100 thousand years old! The "cat" in our game is the majestic Spanish Imperial Eagle. Above). The other is a mammal - the Rabbit. Must have been so num...
Natur-al-Andalus: January 2011
http://naturalandalus.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
A portrait of a little piece of Africa in Europe. Saturday, January 29, 2011. Diary - The Lammergeier. Has become among the rarest of European breeding birds. The decline seems to have started as far back as the 19th Century and its causes seem to have been a combination of the rise of guns, poisoning and nest robbing. Colonel Irby in 1895 wrote how his friend Colonel Verner had already noticed a decline twenty years earlier when. It seems that the presence of the Griffon Vulture. Stark's comments also s...

Martin Hodges' Wildlife Blog: Marbled White Spot first at Tophill Low NR
http://martinhodgessbirdingblog.blogspot.com/2012/06/marbled-white-spot-first-at-tophill-low.html
Saturday, 9 June 2012. Marbled White Spot first at Tophill Low NR. As the non-friendly moth trapping weather continues into another week, it really is a case of making the best of it at Tophill Low NR, East Yorkshire, although finding the enthusiasm is proving to be difficult. And today it caught me out as I was wasn't paying attention. Fortunately, Richard Sears was on the ball as he pulled out the site's first Marbled White Spot. Just two of the species that have been encountered on the in the last week.
