Birds, Bugs, and Botany: Revisiting my Wish List
http://birdsbugsbotany.blogspot.com/2017/01/revisiting-my-wish-list.html
Birds, Bugs, and Botany. Nature Photography and Blog. Sunday, 8 January 2017. Revisiting my Wish List. As some of you may recall, in mid-July of last year I made a list. Of birds I wanted to try to see before the end of 2016, hopefully getting my life list up to 250. That hasn't happened yet, but I'm sure that soon I'll hit the 250 mark. The birds I observed are in bold print. And the birds I tried for are marked with an asterisk. 2 American White Pelican. 24 Lesser Black-backed Gull. Feb 24, 2017. Doing...
Birds, Bugs, and Botany: The Rarities of 2016
http://birdsbugsbotany.blogspot.com/2017/01/the-rarities-of-2016.html
Birds, Bugs, and Botany. Nature Photography and Blog. Wednesday, 4 January 2017. The Rarities of 2016. 2016 was an amazing year for rarities (check out my post on a 2016 Ontario Big Year. For a list of rare birds). I didn't get to see all of them (Common Ringed Plover and Crested Caracara being the most painful not to see), but I caught up with a few of them. The first rarity I was successful in seeing was a Greater White-fronted Goose in London. Piping Plovers aren't really "rarities" in Ontario, but fi...
Birds, Bugs, and Botany: June 2016
http://birdsbugsbotany.blogspot.com/2016_06_01_archive.html
Birds, Bugs, and Botany. Nature Photography and Blog. Thursday, 30 June 2016. More Bugs, More Plants, and Birds Too. After having such a success going down to my local park the previous day, I decided to go again. I found a few new plants and insects, and I managed to get a few pictures of a couple things that I saw on Saturday, but failed to get a photo. Another reason I wanted to go back was to re-find the Eastern Amberwing that I had seen earlier while riding my bike. Yet another Familiar Bluet? A pla...
Birds, Bugs, and Botany: August 2016
http://birdsbugsbotany.blogspot.com/2016_08_01_archive.html
Birds, Bugs, and Botany. Nature Photography and Blog. Monday, 29 August 2016. RBG and Some Shorebirds. Yesterday I decided to see what the Royal Botanical Gardens had in store, so I headed there for the day. There are some good birding opportunities within the properties, and I had the most luck at the Arboretum. I also checked out Hendrie Park, The Rock Garden, and the RBG center. After Hendrie Park, it was off to the Arbor-thingy for lunch. Chickadees and Cardinals were looking for handouts. After the ...
Birds, Bugs, and Botany: December 2016
http://birdsbugsbotany.blogspot.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Birds, Bugs, and Botany. Nature Photography and Blog. Saturday, 31 December 2016. 2016: My First Full Year as a Naturalist. 2016 was a big year for me. Sure, I didn't see as many species as I would have wanted to, but it was still awesome. My 2016 birding year list sits at 235, 83 of which were new species bring my life list up to 242, and I still have a chance to add a Northern Shrike! January 1st: New Year's Day Birding (I'll do a "Big Day" of sorts). January 2nd: 2016 Full Year list for Birds. The bes...

Jeremy Birder - The Bird Is The Word!: Crazy Chase Season 2016!
http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2016/12/crazy-chase-season-2016.html
Tuesday, 13 December 2016. Crazy Chase Season 2016! First, I must make note of the fact that I am planning on doing a Big Year in Ontario in 2017. If this is news to you, stay tuned, as there will be much more Big Year content to come soon! The reason I'm mentioning it here is because it has a lot to do with how I went about birding this year in preparation! 1) The bird is new to my Ontario list. 2) The bird is really, really rare and I may not have a chance to chase another one for a number of years.

http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2016_12_01_archive.html
Saturday, 31 December 2016. I’m doing a Big Year in 2017! In case I somehow I have not told everyone yet, I am planning on doing a birding Big Year in Ontario in 2017! I have been planning for it for over a year and whether I am fully prepared or not, 2017 is less than one day away and I’m getting excited! Many, many mornings will be spent behind my telescope at various shores. This is a photo of me birding the shore of Lake Erie at Point Pelee in autumn 2016. Wondering what the current record is? This i...
Jeremy Birder - The Bird Is The Word!: November 2013
http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Thursday, 21 November 2013. Elegant Tern at Fort Erie? So there is an Elegant Tern on the Niagara River right now. I am not 100% sure if it has been officially seen over Ontario water but if/when it is, it is/will be Ontario's first ever record for this species! Wow, two first records in Fort Erie this fall! Hopefully I can follow up on this with a sighting and some photos. If not, oh well! Tuesday, 5 November 2013. Long time no post! Thursday, 26 September, 2013. Friday, 27 September, 2013. We got very ...
Jeremy Birder - The Bird Is The Word!: Goatweed Leafwing butterfly - A First Canadian Record
http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2016/12/goatweed-leafwing-butterfly-first.html
Thursday, 29 December 2016. Goatweed Leafwing butterfly - A First Canadian Record. This is virtually an identical article to the one I submitted to the recent edition of Toronto Entymological Association's newsjournal called Ontario Insects and Essex County Field Naturalists' Club newsletter called The Egret. Enjoy! My first view of the Goatweed Leafwing at Point Pelee. Wow! I was walking alone around lunch time in the Red Cedar savannah habitat of Sparrow Field near The Tip of Point Pelee National.
Jeremy Birder - The Bird Is The Word!: Big Year Summary - Week 1
http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2017/01/big-year-summary-week-1.html
Wednesday, 11 January 2017. Big Year Summary - Week 1. It's been over a week now since the start of 2017, and I've made some serious progress toward my Ontario birding Big Year! I spent the first week of the year touring much of Southern Ontario in an attempt to see any of the province's currently known rarities. It worked out, to say the least! Smith's Longspur near Long Point was a great species to get out of the way on day one of my 2017 Ontario Big Year! I managed to capture some photos of it in flig...
'Burg Birder: Fog 'n Blog: May 17 Birding
http://burgbirder.blogspot.com/2015/05/fog-n-blog-may-17-birding.html
BLAKE'S BIRDING AND NATURE BLOG. Sunday, May 17, 2015. Fog 'n Blog: May 17 Birding. I arrived at Rondeau Park early this morning in dense fog. Not many new birds had come in and birding was not all that exciting today. Most of the birds were along Lakeshore Road, but that is not the best place to get out and look for birds. Elsewhere in the park it was very quiet for birds. Bennett Road was virtually abandoned in the early morning! The Glossy Ibis was feeding, as well as the two American Avocets. We spen...
Jeremy Birder - The Bird Is The Word!: April 2013
http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Monday, 22 April 2013. The flooded fields and mudflats at places like Hillman Marsh now contain many Pectoral Sandpipers, Dunlin, Greater and Lesser Yellowlegs, Wilson's Snipes, and the odd Spotted Sandpiper. Friends of mine have also seen a Least Sandpiper, Black-bellied Plovers, and even a Ruff lately! I spent hours looking but could not relocate the Ruff :( oh well, next time! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Happy hiking and good birding! View my complete profile. More About Me - Jeremy Bensette.
Jeremy Birder - The Bird Is The Word!: Crazy Chase Season 2016 - there's more! Crested Caracara anyone?
http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2016/12/crazy-chase-season-2016-theres-more.html
Monday, 26 December 2016. Crazy Chase Season 2016 - there's more! My last post about rarity chasing adventures left off at the night of November 26/27, probably around 1 am. Let's not forget my rules for chasing rarities this fall. I am planning to do a Big Year starting on New Year's Day 2017, so in an attempt to practice relaxing to help prepare I decided that I would only chase rarities very far this fall if:. 1) The bird is new to my Ontario list. It was a wild Crested Caracara in Ontario! Crested Ca...

http://jeremybirder.blogspot.com/2013_02_01_archive.html
Thursday, 28 February 2013. Some Recent Birding - Raptors and Waterfowl. It's been a few days since I last posted, but that certainly does not mean that I have not been birding! Oh, where to begin. That's a new personal record for a drive across the county! We made our way to Lake View Park Marina and the Trumpeter Swans were about as close to us as possible, which was awesome! Thank you for reading, and happy birding! Saturday, 23 February 2013. Paul Pratt's Group Birding Trip - February 23. Who knows h...

Birds n' bugs's Awards. Some of my photos which have won awards. May 18, 2014. Birds n' bugs. This shot was taken early in the morning at Marl Pond 3 in the Babcock-Webb Wildlife Management Area near Punta Gorda. I like the way that the trees cast their shadows through the mist. It was accepted for the 2014 Scenic City International Photography Exhibition in Chattanooga TN in the Projected Image Color Landscape division. May 18, 2014. Birds n' bugs. Birds, Bugs, and Botany
Birds, Bugs, and Botany. Nature Photography and Blog. Monday, 9 January 2017. Weekend Big Year: Revised Rules. I’ve been thinking about my “Weekend Big Day” in a bit more depth recently, and I thought that I should make a few changes. While the rules will remain basically the same, the section about the “extra days” didn’t make as much sense as I originally thought. Here are the new rules:. I will only count birds on the weekend (Saturday and Sunday) or “extra day” (see below). Birds, Bugs, and Botany.
