Growing organic hops: Rhizomeville - the gift that keeps on giving

http://bitterbinehops.blogspot.com/2013/03/rhizomeville-gift-that-keeps-on-giving.html

Monday, March 25, 2013. Rhizomeville - the gift that keeps on giving. Well, it's spring again! This really doesn't matter to the hop farmer though, because our work never ends. Spring, summer, fall, or winter.there is always something to work on at the farm. The above obligatory farmer gripe is well justified because we began pulling rhizomes out of the ground on March 9th while the rest of Canada was still under the strong, frigid grip of winter. Lillooet has been crazy hot. Ales But they are quickly be...

Growing organic hops: October 2009

http://bitterbinehops.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Monday, October 19, 2009. This early cold snap was enough incentive to start moving the potted hop plants indoors for the winter. So we cut the bines and twine from each plant and brought them into our garage where we sandwiched them with layers of peat to maintain steady temperatures and prevent the plants from drying out during the cold, dry winter. It was also a pleasant surprise to see that most Mt. Hood and Cascade plants rebounded from the brink after we fixed the problem in the irrigation line...

Growing organic hops: May 2010

http://bitterbinehops.blogspot.com/2010_05_01_archive.html

Thursday, May 13, 2010. As it turns out, it's not that complicated. However, there are a number of factors that will influence the rate at which your raw material will break down. The most important consideration is obtaining an optimal Carbon:Nitrogen ratio. There are a number of compost calculators online to help you estimate this ratio using a suite of raw materials. Http:/ www.klickitatcounty.org/solidwaste/fileshtml/organics/compostcalc.htm. Of course, we recorded the temperature of the pile periodi...

Growing organic hops: May 2009

http://bitterbinehops.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Monday, May 25, 2009. Welcome, the training of the bines. Welcome to the Bitterbine Blog! There are are few reasons why I started a blog detailing the progress at the Bitterbine Farm. For those who are interested in actually growing hops yourselves, well then you are in luck! My second goal with this blog is to document our hop-growing project every step of the way. I hope to shed some light on the biology of Humulus lupulus. THE TRAINING OF THE BINES. We will need to continually monitor the trellis as t...

Growing organic hops: January 2010

http://bitterbinehops.blogspot.com/2010_01_01_archive.html

Monday, January 18, 2010. The Big Freeze and The Big Bad Trellis. Here at Bitterbine Farm/Ranch (we haven't quite figured out which description best describes our 18 acres.) we bring in the New Year with a half-finished trellis for the one-acre hop yard. There has been a Herculean effort by friends and family during the fall to get us to this stage. The majority of their sweat was poured into making the 88 hand-made cedar poles - the cellulose bones of the trellis system. To flex and not break in the fac...

Monday, May 13, 2013. Quest for the Perfect Bread. My first attempt at baking bread was quite disastrous. But I can't blame it all on my own ineptitude. It was Jamie Oliver's fault. Really. I mean, I love his books and recipes. But seriously, why write 3 1/4 oz packet of yeast when you can write 3 packets of 1/4 oz yeast? But it got me so worked up that I woke up the next morning at 6 am and made a new batch with the correct amount of yeast. I kept peering at the dough as it was proofing. Punchin...Next:...
