Tag Archives: raising chickens. Posted in Backyard Chickens. I found week four of Coursera. 8216;s Chicken Behaviour and Welfare. Freedom from hunger or thirst. Freedom from pain, injury or disease. Freedom to express (most) normal behavior. Freedom from fear and distress. Yet, you should! I’ll check it out! The final week of the course will be wrapping up this weekend, as I head down to Myrtle Beach for a much needed vacation! I hope everyone else has a chance to travel/unwind/relax this summer! Posted in Backyard Chickens. Just a quick updated regarding the Chicken Behaviour and Welfare. Course I am taking with Coursera. Week two covered feeding and drinking behaviors, and comfort behaviors and social behaviors including preening, dust bathing, and social spacing. I had heard this fact before, but wanted to share it – chickens can recognize up to 80 individuals! That’s more people than I can remember – ha! Preventing the spread of Coccidiosis after death. Posted in Backyard Chickens. I haven’t updated recently, and felt like I should check in with you all! Fall is fast approaching and we no longer need air conditioning at night, or even during some days. The cicadas have died out, but there are still some pretty great bug sounds at night when we throw our windows open. I’m looking forward to wearing more layers and celebrating the upcoming holidays! Speaking of my son, he has a new favorite book: Edgar Gets Ready for Bed: A BabyLit Board Book. It is such ...

Tag Archives: heritage breed. Posted in Backyard Chickens. I wrote this post 2 weeks ago when we got slammed with snow and forgot to post it – oops! Adams County, Pennsylvania and surrounding areas got hit with a major snow storm over the last two days. I haven’t seen totals for my town yet, but as of 5:30pm last night we were at 29″ in less than 24 hours! And some extra protein feed in their food. I went out and bought an additional chicken waterer so that each morning we can bring out one with fres...

Who cares what anyone thinks, I'm farming in the city! What Have I Been Up To? I have been waging WAR! That’s what I’ve been up to! First of all I have been waging war on WEEDS – and losing. Now I am waging war on bunnies – and also losing! I may have to rethink this whole gardening thing. I mean this is supposed to be relaxing – Right? Maybe I should take up sewing instead? Spring started out with a BANG. Just the right amount of early warm weather and rain made everything POP! Yes, I said pooping.

Whirl'd Works Farm. A small homestead farm in Central Texas. November 7, 2016. Truly a weekend to remember. Vacations are a rarity these days, especially with a toddler and a barn full of hungry animals. It wasn’t just a simple time alone however. We enjoyed the tremendous pleasure of a Weekend to Remember. October 25, 2016. For the past mo...

Whirl'd Works Farm. A small homestead farm in Central Texas. March 25, 2015. Whirld Wide Wednesday – Johnny Appleseed Goes to Jail. If a Johnny Appleseed in today’s world devoted himself only to planting and growing apple trees, he would be relatively safe. However, the day he bit into one of those apples, took out a seed and handed it to someone else he just might be in violation of the law in most States. The irony I find here is that there are a very small number of extremely large agricultural corpor...

To all girls, women and sympathizers who are more "macho" than many men, but without losing femininity! Visitors and their awesomeness! I hurt my knee real bad about 12 days ago, on my very first roller derby practice in quad skates. And I still can't really walk (now I'm a pro at limping, though), and who knows how long I'm going to be away from my brand new amazing skates! But now let me write about good news. Husband and I had visitors for a week and it was AMAZING! I'm crazy about that woman! We went...
