The Grackle: Pruning with Compassion
http://the-grackle.blogspot.com/2014/07/pruning-with-compassion.html
Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. Pruning is part of gardening. As the saying goes, we must prune to make things grow. So we deadhead flowers. We cut back unruly growth. We manicure our spaces to clean things up a bit and encourage growth the way that we want it. The problem is, there's a community of living beings that depend on those plants that we choose to clip, and this is doubly or triply true if we have created gardens with native plants. Now, I'm not a super huge fan of spiders, bu...

Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. This is a list of plants found in our garden. The Grackle: Wasps and Rakes
http://the-grackle.blogspot.com/2014/09/wasps-and-rakes.html
Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. I'm really glad that I found these before they found me. Do you see them? Gardening often has it's surprises, and wasps are one of the more common. Many folks are apt to pull out the bug spray and destroy the nests, but I encourage everyone to think twice. Just beware the hidden nests hanging under a leaf or on a branch in your garden! Wasps are beautiful, complex creatures. 9/21/14, 10:11 PM. Kate S. said. Ohhh my goodness; good to know! 9/22/14, 12:55 PM.

The Grackle: garden: New String Lights
http://the-grackle.blogspot.com/2011/01/garden-new-string-lights.html
Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. Garden: New String Lights. Lighting is a critical part of the livable, or lived-in, garden. The garden, for me, is all about extra rooms, and they just happen to be rooms outside where we share space with the worms, bugs and other critters. Here at the Grackle, we've tried to create room-like spaces throughout the garden that we can enjoy at all times of the day and night. Ah, the joys of a house from the 1940s. The string lights we have been using are fro...

The Grackle: plants: Oh, Xylosma!
http://the-grackle.blogspot.com/2010/03/plants-oh-xylosma.html
Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. Plants: Oh, Xylosma! How I admired the beautiful xylosma trees growing at the Natural Gardener, their multi-trunked stems and evergreen leaves arching over the small shrub section of the store. And so, I took the plunge and purchased one for the bed by our bedroom window. I needed something to create a canopy to screen us from the neighbors in winter. Why now, do I question you, xylosma? 8220;Exactly what I need for this spot in my backyard.”. Well, perhap...

The Grackle: When American Germander Takes Over
http://the-grackle.blogspot.com/2014/06/when-american-germander-takes-over.html
Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. When American Germander Takes Over. Is starting to bloom with gorgeous repetitive whitish pink flower spikes. This plant is taking over the front corner of the front garden, an is threatening to take over the entire garden. I'm too busy (ahem, lazy) to keep it in check, so what will? I often allow a plant to take over and occasionally regret it. Pink primrose and obedient plant and ruellia, Im looking at YOU! 6/8/14, 5:24 PM. Amen to that, TexasDeb! That s...

The Grackle: Garden from Above
http://the-grackle.blogspot.com/2014/12/garden-from-above.html
Butterfly and Moth List. Reptiles and More List. It's this time of year that I end up on the roof cleaning gutters or hanging Christmas lights. I can't resist snapping some photos of the garden from up there, which provides such an interesting "plan view" of the space. Bodi relaxes by the Ocular. A "plan view" of the front garden with yuccas, sedges, loquats and yaupons in view. Sedges, pale-leaf yucca, Mexican buckeye and Lacey oak dominate this space. What will have vertical form? 12/15/14, 4:15 PM.
