In the Middle Ages, the meat of the black fleeced Welsh Mountain sheep was prized for its richness and excellence. The black wool, known as 'Cochddu' (reddish brown) was much sought-after by merchants. Century Welsh flockmasters recognised the commercial potential of the black lambs and began to select and breed them carefully to produce a pure and separate strain of Black Welsh Mountain Sheep. Flocks of the pure breed are now widely distributed throughout the United Kingdom and overseas.

Class 2: Pair of Shearling Ewes. 1st - E O Williams 2nd - T G Davies 3rd - E D Williams. Class 3: Pair of Ewe Lambs. 1st - D R L Williams 2nd - P Laws 3rd - C Garn. Class 4: A pen of up to 5 ewes. 1st - T G Davies 2nd - T G Davies 3rd - L Cox. Class 5: Single Ram, 2 years old and over. Class 6: Single Shearling Ram.

The breed produces premium quality meat. The grain is close and the bone is light with a very favourable meat to bone ratio. The small joints, so popular today, are full of succulent, lean meat and with a minimum of wasteful fat. The meat is rich in colour and full of flavour. The major proportion of the weight is in the more valuable joints. The breed has strong historical links with the Royal Smithfield Show, which date back to the 1920's and many successes have been scored at this show.
