The Blayleys: Oregon - Coast to Eugene
https://blayleys.blogspot.com/2015/02/oregon-coast-to-eugene.html
John and Pamela's Cycling Adventures. Photo by Jason DeVarennes. Friday, February 13, 2015. Oregon - Coast to Eugene. Posted by Fixie Pixie. Since we had winched ourselves up Ten Mile Creek the day before, we decided to avoid riding the same road in the same direction and instead chose to climb out of Yachats on Cummins Peak Road. It had nothing to do with which climb might be easier! We had a big day planned. I'd made a reservation at Velo B&B. At this stage, we had definitively left the cool breezes of...
The Blayleys: Oregon - Eugene

John and Pamela's Cycling Adventures. Photo by Jason DeVarennes. Tuesday, March 31, 2015. Posted by Fixie Pixie. One of the disadvantages of travelling without firm plans and reservations is that you may find that the place you'd really like to stay has no vacancy. For our time in Eugene, we had hoped to stay at Velo B&B. Now, when seeking recommendations for anything, it's important to know your source. We've learned over time that when people recommend a restaurant or place to stay, to ask them what th...

John and Pamela's Cycling Adventures. Photo by Jason DeVarennes. Different people and you will get n. Different (and most likely contradictory) opinions for what defines a good brevet bike. Do a simple google search and you will find loads of articles. On precisely this topic. (It may be how you found this one! So since there is already so much information out there, why am I bothering to add to the noise with this post? Here's the Reader's Digest condensed version. A good brevet bike is one you. If your...
The Blayleys: Ireland - Duckett's Grove Under Sunshine
https://blayleys.blogspot.com/2015/01/ireland-ducketts-grove-under-sunshine.html
John and Pamela's Cycling Adventures. Photo by Jason DeVarennes. Saturday, November 8, 2014. Ireland - Duckett's Grove Under Sunshine. Posted by Fixie Pixie. Saturday was our last full day in Ireland. Our flight out of Dublin was scheduled for early Sunday morning, so we'd need to clean, disassemble and pack bikes the night before. Of course, we also needed to get back to Dublin. Fortunately, chauffeur-extraordinaire, David, was ever-accommodating! I was amused to see a sign on a building across the way,...
The Blayleys: Caring for your Wool
https://blayleys.blogspot.com/2015/01/caring-for-your-wool.html
John and Pamela's Cycling Adventures. Photo by Jason DeVarennes. Thursday, January 29, 2015. Caring for your Wool. Posted by Fixie Pixie. One of the many advantages of wool is the fact that it doesn't retain odor, and can be used many times between washings without getting stinky. I usually just hang my wool sweaters and jerseys to air out and only wash them when they are actually soiled, or if they do start to smell. This feature makes wool an ideal fabric for travel. It is designed specifically to prot...

Velocio: Fear and Awe in the Heart of the Alps
http://velocio.blogspot.com/2014/09/fear-and-awe-in-heart-of-alps.html
Skiing, Climbing, Cycling, etcetera. Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Fear and Awe in the Heart of the Alps. The ridge down from the Aiguille du Midi. A Man with a Plan. It turned out to be a perfect day. I was delighted that my guide was older than I am! Richard Parker was sixty, and radiated calm and skill in equal measures. I greatly enjoyed his company, as we climbed The Story of O. The land between Starlight and Storm, on Ice and Snow and Rock? On Cathedral Ledge. A trip to International Mountain Eq...

Velocio: March 2007
http://velocio.blogspot.com/2007_03_01_archive.html
Skiing, Climbing, Cycling, etcetera. Monday, March 26, 2007. Spring 200k Brevet (in 2006). Do you think we'll pay for this later? You never know, so I got up at 5:15 anyway, looked out the window, and saw clear roads. So I drove down to Westfield, MA, and got ready to ride. I was running a bit late, and didn't really have time to chat before the ride, which is unfortunate as I usually don't see most of the folks again! But today would be a little different. Eventually rode in with Wayne, had a nice chat.

Tag Archives: double century. Devil Mountain Double ride report part one: Mines Road. May 20, 2013. The riders were off and after about 30 seconds of riding in the pitch black surrounded by other slightly sketchy double riders, my mood lifted and I became happy again. I am usually quite happy on these rides. (unless I am at a rest stop- Rest stops make me cranky.). The Devil Mountain Double. I loved all the cheering and encouragement I got from other people all day. Not only did the Mount Hamilton pe...

May 27, 2013. Mirror, mirror on the wall. I like the punctuation. Explain yourself: Favorite Roads. May 20, 2013. Looking west as I climbed Hopland Grade from the west. KevinF wrote into the SFRandon list last Friday with the following query and then answered his own question. What are your favorite stretches of road in the Bay Area and why? Yeah, I remember riding there. That was great. Hopland grade is another favorite of mine and I resist listing that for the same reason above. 8221; he asked. I don&#...

John and Pamela's Cycling Adventures. Photo by Jason DeVarennes. Saturday, January 6, 2018. Posted by Fixie Pixie. Since completing our first Festive 500. It had a promising prelude. See, back in the spring, my sister-in-law phoned and asked us to sit down before she shared her news. After 12 years, she and the fiancé had finally set a wedding date. She then asked John to walk her down the aisle on New Years Eve. My initial reaction was disbelief! Surely they wouldnt make us travel at that. A truly rem...
