http://blazin-trailblazer.blogspot.com/2013_11_01_archive.html
Trailblazin': adventures in wildlife ecology. The benign adventures and ponderings of a wildlife ecologist who is interested in old school, down-and-dirty field research. Not cutting edge, but occassionally forced to blaze a trail when in the outdoors. Sunday, November 24, 2013. Happy Walkin' Bird Day From Your Friendly Neighborhood Trailblazer! In anticipation of the coming Holiday, I figured I should post the best camera trap picture of a Walkin' Bird (. Alsohave a look at this rafter (look it up :) ).

Trailblazin': adventures in wildlife ecology. The benign adventures and ponderings of a wildlife ecologist who is interested in old school, down-and-dirty field research. Not cutting edge, but occassionally forced to blaze a trail when in the outdoors. Friday, February 17, 2012. I am frequently stumped by things I observe when out in the field. This morning (February 17th) was no exception. I leaned over and nudged the critter (a White-footed Mouse,. My next thought was that perhaps a bird of prey had gr...

Trailblazin': adventures in wildlife ecology. The benign adventures and ponderings of a wildlife ecologist who is interested in old school, down-and-dirty field research. Not cutting edge, but occassionally forced to blaze a trail when in the outdoors. Friday, February 21, 2014. In my most recent post. I mentioned that we found tracks of the Bob-tailed Cat (. But we finally caught up with this Sneaky Bob! Earlier in the Spring, the students on the wolf project had a few quick glimpses. I haven't put alot of thought into it, but I d...

Salameandering: Eggs-celent!
http://salameandering.blogspot.com/2015/07/eggs-celent.html
The wildlife-filled and botanically inclined ramblings of an ecologist. Friday, July 10, 2015. With summer well under way, it's the time of year for critters of all sorts to be laying their eggs. Whether bird, reptile, or amphibian, hear are some of the eggs I've come across in the past few weeks. Killdeer eggs blend in nicely with the gravely areas they make their nests. Four eggs are in the far right of this picture. To start off, we have the fine-feathered shorebird, the Killdeer ( Charadrius vociferus.

The wildlife-filled and botanically inclined ramblings of an ecologist. Sunday, November 3, 2013. Two Forms, Same Plant. What about fossil fuels is fossil? Some might say the "fossil" part comes from the fact that it is a rather outdated source of energy. Driving past the exhausted oil fields of Texas, it could certainly be said that it leaves fossils. Yet, as many of us know, they are fossil fuels because they are the organic, compressed remains of living things from ages past. Want to learn more? I act...

The wildlife-filled and botanically inclined ramblings of an ecologist. Sunday, October 27, 2013. A Tiny Salamander Appears. As winter draws near, it will be time for many terrestrial salamanders to reduce their surface activity and switch to their underground retreats. While some salamanders will use underground burrow networks created by small mammals, others will create their own. Some members of the red-backed salamander species ( Plethodon cinereus. Hiking and nature exploration in and around Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Saturday, June 14, 2014. Paean to a Walnut Tree. The walnut courts and conquers, but it also gives generously to its neighbors. Each year, the walnut doles out rich nuts to squirrels and raccoons. It offers shelter to nervous Carolina wrens and boastful bluebirds. Without recompense, the walnut encourages every passerby to revel in its shade. Without shame, the walnut tempts voyeurs to contemplate its ...E (Sep 2014):...

The wildlife-filled and botanically inclined ramblings of an ecologist. Thursday, February 27, 2014. No Thanks, I'm Full. Nobody likes a bad meal. You can put in the time, energy, and dedication, yet when all is said and done, what you get is disappointment. I don't know if wild animals experience similar events, but I certainly wonder. For instance, could predators pursue and succeed in catching prey, only for prey to taste bad or have some defense that leaves the predator out of luck? Two additional sp...
