bleakonomy: Unenthused
http://bleakonomy.blogspot.com/2011/02/unenthused.html
Random thoughts about the world. I am not at all excited about this. Which began in 2005 with a meager $1 million investment and has grown into one of the most heavily visited news Web sites in the country, is being acquired by AOL. In a deal that creates an unlikely pairing of two online media giants. I don't think anyone can argue that HuffPo. Isn't huge. It is an enormously successful site, and there's no question that it's managed to draw lots of eyeballs. Is all that good. Its headlines often mi...
bleakonomy: Still, it's better than Crash
http://bleakonomy.blogspot.com/2011/02/still-its-better-than-crash.html
Random thoughts about the world. Still, it's better than Crash. 1) I am not a big fan of hip-hop music. This probably has much to do with the kinds of music I was raised with, which tended toward Nanci Griffith and classical. I do not consider my lack of appreciation a reflection on the inherent quality of the musical form. 2) I am not a big fan of Eminem in particular. I think he is a misogynistic, homophobic lout. Which were presented on Sunday night at the Staples Center arena here. No No, no, no.

Random thoughts about the world. Psychiatrists masquerading as real doctors. OK, before any of you harangue me about the post title, it is meant. Mostly] in jest. Of my very best friends from medical school, three went into psychiatry. I briefly flirted with switching to psychiatry during residency. But most [honest] psychiatrists will also tell you that they turn a ghostly shade of pale when confronted with any non-psychiatric medical problem. Anyhow. onward.). Nurses Masquerading as Doctors. bleakonomy: Something rotten in the state of Pennsylvania
http://bleakonomy.blogspot.com/2011/02/something-rotten-in-state-of.html
Random thoughts about the world. Something rotten in the state of Pennsylvania. For those of you who have missed the gruesome case of Kermit Gosnell and his victims, Slate. Has a grim article. It reads like something from an Eli Roth movie. [For the second time. There are these disturbing images:. The grand jury's report, citing forensic evidence and testimony from clinic employees, accuses Gosnell of routinely delivering viable babies. And severing their spinal cords. But it also details ill treatment o...
bleakonomy: September 2010
http://bleakonomy.blogspot.com/2010_09_01_archive.html
Random thoughts about the world. And here I am, stuck at work. I am of two minds with regard to celebrities. On the one hand, I am an absolute sucker for watching them parade around in fancy outfits accepting awards. This probably has as much to do with my love of trivia and shiny things as it does with actual celebrities, but my persistent devotion to the best blog ever. Indicates a certain fascination with the famous themselves. I am finding myself succumbing to Gaga's catchy little songs in the same w...

Laquo; Summer’s End Roundtable, Part II. Raquo; Summer’s End Roundtable, Part IV. Summer’s End Roundtable, Part III. This is the third of a four-part roundtable discussion with the Infinite Summer Guides. Infinite Summer: Looking back, do parts of the novel that seemed superfluous at the time now make sense? I’m starting to understand that even if one section doesn’t give us any new information or make sense as a part of the story, it’s still important because it builds IJ. 8216;s tone. Infinite Jest.

Always Judged Guilty: Huthi Support, and the South
http://alwaysjudgedguilty.blogspot.com/2011/02/huthi-support-and-south.html
Let nothing human be alien to me"- Terence. Thursday, February 17, 2011. Huthi Support, and the South. Greg- who's been on a Kerouak-like tear the last 24 hours, though presumably without the uppers- briefly parses. Abd al-Malik al-Huthi's declaration of support for the demonstrations around the country. I don't know, but I doubt it. So what impact, if any, does moral support from the Huthis count for? So, then, this is a question. This is not policy advice or a cocksure guarantee, but a barely-forme...

A Blog About 2666. My contribution to the online group read of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. May 15, 2010. A couple of posts ago I asserted that there was no one master meaning at the center of. A Blog About 2666. My contribution to the online group read of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. 2666 and the Holocaust →. April 17, 2010. There’s a good discussion of the homophobia in. Going on right now. VIOLENCE | A Blog About 2666

A Blog About 2666. My contribution to the online group read of Roberto Bolaño's 2666. 2666 As Sublimated Memoir →. April 4, 2010. 2666 is a novel about violence. Obviously. And while there is doubtless more violence to come, now that we are leaving The Part About the Crimes I thought it might be useful try to take stock of the role of violence in the book so far. In what ways is 2666, and The Part About The Crimes in particular, “about” violence? The feeling that in places like Juarez/Santa Teresa “...
