Orienteering in North Carolina: December 2012
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2012_12_01_archive.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Monday, December 17, 2012. December 16, 2012 in South Umstead. We got lucky with the weather the second weekend in a row - it was unusually warm for December. Tanya and I went to Josef's traditional 6KM sprint in High Point on Saturday and then to an advanced meet in South Umstead on Sunday. Both courses were a lot of fun! But it worked this time! Here is how I ran:. 5 Again kept my elevation when going around the re-entrant to the south. Then went straight south until...

Orienteering in North Carolina: February 2011
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2011_02_01_archive.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Monday, February 28, 2011. Feb 27 in North Umstead. It was a tough one. The courses were beautifully designed and non-man-made feature map made them even more challenging. I liked that, but it didn't go very well for me. I lost a lot of time on two controls: one was caused by the map (I can't put it down as my mistake), but the second one was clearly due to my fault and I lost almost 15 mins there! Here is how I ran:. 6: crossed the re-entrant, walked up the hill, then dow...

Dirty Shoes: Uwharrie Mountain Run
http://brittanygoesrunning.blogspot.com/2011/02/uwharrie-mountain-run.html
Everything is more fun when you get dirty. Monday, February 7, 2011. At 6:55 am on Saturday morning, the 40-mile Uwharrie runners were still in the drop bag tent, despite the race starting in 5 minutes. Why? The cold temperatures, buckets of raining pouring down, and. well do I really need another reason? If I was planning on running this race, it would be one thing. I'd have adrenaline, the running would keep me warm, and racing in the rain makes sense. Hiking to a DNF does not! But, I was ok with this.

TRi*Tawn: Marathon Week is Here!
http://www.tritawn.com/2015/05/marathon-week-is-here.html
Tuesday, May 19, 2015. Marathon Week is Here! Early morning running, all mine mmmm. Speaking of him, I talked to Phil the Man last week for an EP podcast released yesterday. I don't think that kind of pacing is crazy talk for me; however, being that this is an unknown distance/race for me still (an open marathon very different than marathon in an Ironman! Oh ya and my goal time also happens to be my BQ time; Boston 2016? We'll see. Just depends where I'm at in life. Almost Bailing on the Marathon? Event,...

Orienteering in North Carolina: September 2012
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2012_09_01_archive.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Wednesday, September 12, 2012. September 9 in North Umstead. I was asked on Facebook. If I used a MT bike during this event. I did not! It was just a very good run for me, maybe the best I ever had in Umstead. I ran all the way, didn't make serious mistakes (there was one where I lost 50 secs or so and another where I lost 10 secs), but everything else was clean and close to optimal. Here is my route:. 4: there was too much staff on the map before the control, so I decided...

Orienteering in North Carolina: January 2011
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Monday, January 24, 2011. I finally made it! I went though an advanced course in Raven Rock without making any major mistakes or spending hours looking for misplaced controls! It look me 7 years to put one decent run/walk there. Here is a history of my struggles in this dreadful place:. Red - 3 hours, misplaced controls, lots of mistakes DNF. Won the yellow course with a cast on my leg :). Red - 3 hours, misplaced controls, cold rain, DNF. Here is how I ran:. 5: up to the ...

Orienteering in North Carolina: April 2013
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Monday, April 15, 2013. Umstead South - Apr 14, 2013. The course itself wasn't too hard navigation wise, but quite hilly and physically demanding - I usually struggle with such configurations heat or no heat. There were some very nicely designed legs though: 4-5, 5-6, 9-10 and 10-11 to name a few. Here is how I ran:. 1: used the trail first and then cut straight to the control (and as it turned out through some thorny vines.). 6: walked up the hill and ran down to the rive...

Orienteering in North Carolina: Birkhead Map. Aftermath
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2012/03/birkhead-map-aftermath.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Monday, March 12, 2012. Birkhead Map. Aftermath. And the meet is over. Feels weird. Empty. So much time and effort was put into it over the past 3 months, it's hard to accept that it's all over. Yes, we should meet and do some "lessons learned" thing. Even if just for the sake of a closure. In general the map was adequate, but not great. Our choice of representing rocks and rock formations was unusual. However, after people got accustomed to this style, they were able ...

Orienteering in North Carolina: May 2011
http://go-orienteering.blogspot.com/2011_05_01_archive.html
Orienteering in North Carolina. Saturday, May 14, 2011. Will we swim tomorrow? With all these rains the past few days I have growing suspicion that people will have to swim tomorrow. One of the controls is set in a way that the only reasonable way to/from it is across a creek which is usually knee deep. To late to change it now. Good luck, everyone. Sunday, May 1, 2011. May 1 in South Umstead. Here is how I ran:. 1: I used the trail until it crossed the power line (yes, despite using "no-man-made-feature...
