http://www.pactgrow2learn.ca/2015/07/the-end-of-school-summertime-at-elmbank.html
Thursday, 30 July 2015. The End of School and Summertime at Elmbank! Well, here at Elmbank in mid-July sure does look different compared to the rest of the school year! Instead of 30-50 kids in the garden at any given time, now the garden is less populated, but still busy! On Mondays and Wednesdays, PACT has partnered with one of the City of Toronto's local camps, offering them two garden beds to grow in after their garden became home to a family of skunks! I'm all for it :). It was such an exciting mome...

Grow to Learn: LCI's Growing Plants Have Finally Taken Shape!
http://www.pactgrow2learn.ca/2015/07/lcis-growing-plants-have-finally-taken.html
Monday, 20 July 2015. LCI's Growing Plants Have Finally Taken Shape! Today is July 20th and that means market day! A lot of vegetables were harvested and it is supposed to be one of the best markets so far because of the hot weather and all the different plants that get to be sold, since the last time for some of them was last year, like beans. This week it rained a lot but that was great for the corn and the squash surrounded by clover! They were planted about a month ago and are almost ready to produce.

Thursday, 16 July 2015. The Fruits (and Veggies) of Working Together. As the school year came to a close we were feeling a little sentimental. Here is a lovely poster the WHCI Garden received for their support of a small group of dedicated students that came out to the garden weekly during the school year. The students made great progress in learning to work together and gaining life and work skills. Despite the school year coming to a close, there is still much activity at WHCI! Another program that we ...

Thursday, 31 July 2014. Garlictown at Thistletown Collegiate. A super fun crop being planted by a super fun Thistletown Collegiate student! A fun crop to plant that is well suited to people with limited commitment or availability to engage in regular garden maintenance is Allium sativum, or garlic. Growing garlic is as simple as planting and harvesting! So long as you have a lot of patience, nothing could be easier! We planted a garlic crop on October 14, 2013. Approximately 6-8 inches apart. When prepar...

Tuesday, 12 August 2014. Piloting The Great Bean Project. This past growing season, PACT Grow to Learn teamed up with several community and church groups across the GTA to pilot The Great Bean Project, designed to allow first time gardeners and small community groups to try their hand at small scale bean-garden plots. We chose beans (and peas! Our initial thought was to have schools and community groups find areas of unused or under used fence lines on their properties and grow the beans up the fences, a...

Sunday, 31 May 2015. Spring has Sprung at Elmbank JMI! Boy, what a weird spring we've had this year! Seems like mother Nature went right from Winter into summer in just a few short weeks! May is a trickster month, and you can never be sure of what you are going to get, but despite the wonky ups and downs of the temperature, coupled with the lack of rain, things are really getting growing at Elmbank so far! What a fruit basket! With just under a month to go, the kids will get to experience harvesting and ...

Grow to Learn: April 2014

Wednesday, 30 April 2014. Let the gardening begin! After a typical old-fashioned Canadian winter (aka freakin’ cold! We started planning Elmbank Children’s Garden. First we needed to pick up garbage that was blown into the garden. The fence also needed to be fixed. Some beds needed to be cleaned from last year’s planting. Hay indicates there’s garlic planted there. Hay helps to keep the soil moist and moderates soil temperatures. Three half beds have garlic planted. Plan your garden on graph paper, mark ...

Grow to Learn: November 2013

Friday, 8 November 2013. Fall Photographs and How To Plant Garlic: WHCI and Elmbank Gardens. As the season came to an end, and we harvested the last of our edible crops, we found some special things in the gardens. Our first time trying to grow artichokes produced this lovely specimen! In October, we observed lots of ladybugs and wasps covering a few sunflower plants at the Elmbank Children's Garden. Is this an example of parasitism. Picked lots of tomatillos! Have you heard of the Toronto Seed Library.

Grow to Learn: June 2015
http://www.pactgrow2learn.ca/2015_06_01_archive.html
Thursday, 25 June 2015. Well, things are really shaping up, aren't they? April and May have been a whirlwind, but this June offered a bit of breathing room. Classes are finishing up, seeds have been sown, plants have been planted, and everyone, plants included, is starting to slip into their summer mode. With some of this major work behind us, we had the chance to catch up on some other projects and tick off the garden to-do-list. Our gate is complete! Linden log, meet picnic table. Sprucing up the place.
