Notes on using Vagrant and Thoughts about Learning a New Development Tool

http://www.blog.amycheng.info/posts/vagrant.html

A blog by Amy Cheng. Notes on using Vagrant and Thoughts about Learning a New Development Tool. October 22, 2015. I am about to start a new PHP project, which of course means figuring out how the heck Im going to run a PHP on my Mac. For the redesign of the Brooklyn Museum Website. We were serving pages from a PHP CMS and used MAMP. For local development, I had to fiddle around with. I saw this as an opportunity to learn a new tool, Vagrant. So I took two approaches to configuring my dev environment, fir...

Sucking at soldering. Lessons learned

http://www.blog.amycheng.info/posts/sucking-at-soldering.html

A blog by Amy Cheng. Sucking at soldering. Lessons learned. September 1, 2014. A few weeks ago, I wanted to mess around with the FadeCandy. LED driver. Before I could program anything though, I had to solder some wires and headers to the board, LED panel, and power supply. I havent soldered in like three years so I was rusty and it took like twice as long as I expected. There were solder explosions and the solder itself wasnt sticking to the damn joints. So heres what I learned:. Amy at amycheng.info.

A few thoughts about Pure Data

http://www.blog.amycheng.info/posts/puredata.html

A blog by Amy Cheng. A few thoughts about Pure Data. June 11, 2014. Last night I went to workshop called something like Matter into Music at ITP CAMP. It was a workshop about using Pure Data to create musical instruments (made of Arduino and sensors). I think of Pure Data. Is the open-source (ie FREE) version of MaxMSP, a similiar looking platform(? I found myself a bit lost in the beginning. A couple of points for me:. And the documentation for Polymer. Another reason why I got lost is that the workshop...

Humanity over Technology: Recap of FACETS CON 2015

http://www.blog.amycheng.info/posts/facetscon2015.html

A blog by Amy Cheng. Humanity over Technology: Recap of FACETS CON 2015. May 10, 2015. A couple of weekends ago, I decided to ditch going to the Tech Crunch Disrupt Hackathon. Even though tickets were hard to come by [1]) to attend FACETS CON. A]n interdisciplinary creative coding, interactive art, and video games un-conference. Unfortunately, I was only about to attend Saturday’s panels and missed out on the previous night’s keynote and the next days dual-track: Here are the panels I managed to get to:.

the portfolio of amy cheng || C40 Cities

http://www.amycheng.info/c40

A front-end development on top of Ruby on Rails project. For The Barbarian Group. Project was the complete re-launch of the C40 Cities Inititive (one of the Bloomberg Foundation’s. Programs) website. I was primarily responsibile for front-end developement on top of the Ruby on Rails back end. Instead of using static images (and thus making the client wait for the turnaround on infographics whenever there was a change), I used Raphael.js. Why did I choose SVG over. I made this decision because of support ...

My first computer was a Tandy PC. On it was programs like Microsoft’s. Which I used to generate weird little stories. About princesses that lived in cities instead of enchanted woods and collages of disorganized rainbows and clipart. Then I learned about the Internet. My sites were personal and wouldn’t feel like mine if I used other people’s designs, etc. Besides, I had fun learning how to code and seeing it suddenly render on the screen. Code became a means of expression. And here we are. When there we...

A data visualization project. I was an intern for Tahir Hemphill, an Eyebeam. Resident at that time. I was tasked with finding the right kind of technology to visualize the massive database of hip hop lyrics he had compiled. I played around with Processing. And web apps like Many Eyes. I came across ProtoVis (the precursor for D3. Amy (at) amycheng.info.

http://www.amycheng.info/ge

A front-end development on top with a node.js/grunt.js workflow project. For The Barbarian Group. Project consisted of a complete re-design (which included the implemntation of a responsive design) of the site. I contributed to front-end development and page template creation. I worked on making sure (i.e. navigation) design elements and interactivity would be consistent among different devices. Some things I picked up included using jQuery to shift the order. The main navigation on the desktop.

the portfolio of amy cheng || EMF Mirror

http://www.amycheng.info/emf

A physical computing installation project. EMF Mirror is my graduate thesis project. It is an interactive installation that reacts to all kinds of cell phone signals. I wanted to create a contemplative space that visualizes the electromagnetic fields generated by mobile devices. Cell phones and all electronic devices affect the physical environment invisibly. EMF Mirror is a radiogenic interface between the physical environment and the invisible Hertzian space created by electronics.
