Civis Blog | Just another CH Blogs site

Just another CH Blogs site. The State of Face Tracking Technology. I actually worked on face detection and recognition a little bit in college, but that was 11 years ago, and look at how far video-based face tracking technology has progressed! In the Civis world, people will move about and communicate using avatars that are human, but not. Photorealistic. However, when you meet friends, you want to be able to recognize their faces, and when you talk to them, you want to see their facial expressions.

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. June 16th, 2011 @ 12:46 pm. Annie and I went on a DMZ tour this past Saturday, June 11, which was hosted (and likely subsidized) by the Yeoksam Global Village Center, which I am quite familiar with because I attend Korean class there twice a week. And likely because of this familiarity, the center staff asked me to do a short writeup and share my thoughts. Thoughts on education, economics, politics, software, design, Korea and their various intersections.

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. Honolulu’s Doomed Rail Project. March 31st, 2011 @ 12:33 am. Honolulu’s rail project is in the news again today, which prompted me to think about it yet again. And the more I think about it, the less sense it makes to me. The original $4 billion budget seemed outlandish, and that budget later evolved to $5.5 billion. And even with that kind of budget, the project is expected to take decades to complete. 50 days after opening, Line 9 reached the 10 milli...

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. From iOS to Android: Problems and Solutions. April 21st, 2013 @ 6:22 pm. Within days, I could already tell that I wasn’t going back to my iPhone. The Nexus 4, while certainly not perfect, is by far the best phone I’ve ever owned. iOS 7 and the next iPhone will have to make a huge break from their current trajectory to bring me back, and that doesn’t appear likely. Now I realize that was nothing. The Nexus 4, despite having a 50% larger battery, can&...

Can a non-native speaker achieve native proficiency later in life?

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. Can a non-native speaker achieve native proficiency later in life? December 10th, 2010 @ 1:08 am. This is a question to which I am dedicating a significant portion of this lifetime. I’ve been studying Korean for well over 7 years now, but as any English native attempting to learn Japanese or Korean quickly discovers, these languages are as different from English as one could imagine. People are talking about, I bought a book a couple years ago containin...

Deep thoughts… or not. A release valve for my mind. August 23rd, 2011 @ 9:47 am. Seoul is currently all abuzz with what I’m told is its first-ever referendum: the issue of free school lunches. Problem is, I’m not sure people have considered even the most basic facts before forming an opinion. Now, in Seoul, where this issue is being debated, how many children are in this kind of situation, or something remotely close to it? I’m thinking 5% would be the absolute high end.
