Musings, rants, and much more besides…. ASUS and McAfee’s cringeworthy antivirus campaign. Oh, if only it was this much fun. Which if you’re the poor sod who’s ever spent hours having to wrestle with antivirus software such as McAfee that’s proved to be completely useless in removing any number of infections from Microsoft’s godforsaken products it’s really not. By the way, ASUS products from a hardware standpoint are generally incredibly well designed.). Share on Facebook (Opens in new window). Out of c...

About the potential cost savings and productivity gains to theoretically be had from deploying the Google office productivity stack for NZ government workers. Some excerpts:. One even more closed. Musings, rants, and much more besides…. Flip NZ broadband’s constantly changing IP addresses. Here’s a sample of the IP addresses assigned to a Flip. NZ domestic broadband connection in 30 minutes. This leads to the expected behaviour with certain web-based services:. I’ve used Orcon domestic broadband in the recent past, and while they of course reserve the right to reallocate addresses at any time, I’ve never seen addresses rotate literally every few minutes. Malachi's Server: Hudson
http://malsserver.blogspot.com/2009/04/hudson.html
I've been thinking about setting up a continuous integration server for awhile. After doing some configuration of Cruise Control at work, I decided to try Hudson. First things first. Virtualization? I decided I would rather have it virtualized if for no other reason than that dotster already had dns setup for one of my currently unused ips and I didn't want to wait for the ip change to propagate. Malachi@serveris[0]:/data % pfexec zonecfg -z eoti.org. No such zone configured. Must not be group readable.

Malachi's Server: Et tu Java?

Multiple Accounts/SSH keys on BitBucket. Theoretically, I can add my SSH key to any server I have access to. With BitBucket, that's not always true. BitBucket does not allow the same key to be used for two different accounts. Security measure, I'm sure. It does make it difficult to access my company account and my personal account from the same machine. The workaround is to do the initial download via https, then change the protocol. More specifically. 1 Create an SSH key for WORK. 2 Copy id rsa.pub.

Malachi's Server: zfs-fuse
http://malsserver.blogspot.com/2010/07/zfs-fuse.html
I have recently been looking at using some low-power hardware that has Debian installed (and does not support OpenSolaris). Combined with Oracle's demantling of Sun, I decided to test zfs-fuse. These instructions are in no way supposed to indicate the correct. Simply the way I managed to get it installed and tested. Download the Debian Lenny installer. Create a new VirtualBox machine. Keep track of those addition sdX names, you will need them later. Apt-get install sudo bzip2. To get back to your user.
Malachi's Server: Share your git hooks
http://malsserver.blogspot.com/2011/08/share-your-git-hooks.html
Share your git hooks. At work, we are using git for one of our projects. One of the problems we encountered is that people (including myself) regularly forget to put the branch name in their commit message. Why is that a big deal? Once merged back to master, you see a lot of comments that show no indication of what they were for (for example 'added .gitignore'). I'd like to simplify things so that no one has to remember. No need to prevent the checkin - just fix the comment. Step 2: Add a new hook. Step ...

I had some time to relax after the post-election havoc and South Park was running their annual election mockery episode (I’m always shocked when there’s something I’d actually want to watch on TV). Save yourself from development aches and pains. On 13 April 2009. Sometimes you want to restrict the number of objects that can exist within a certain context. Here is a particularly simple example of a Box that contains Things:. Box is a context that imposes a restriction. The Box class enforces the constraint on the number of Things within it. The number of instances of Thing do not affect this Box, only the Things that exist within it are of any interest in terms of the contextual limit. Public void A...
