Headius: Explanation of Warnings From MRI's Test Suite
http://blog.headius.com/2012/09/explanation-of-warnings-from-mris-test.html
Helping the JVM Into the 21st Century. Wednesday, September 26, 2012. Explanation of Warnings From MRI's Test Suite. JRuby has, for some time now, run the same test suite as MRI. C Ruby, Matz's Ruby). Because not all tests pass, we use minitest-excludes. To mask out the failures, and over time we unmask stuff as we fix it. However, there's a number of warnings we get from the suite that are nonfatal and unmaskable. I thought I'd show them to you and tell their stories. GCstress= does nothing on JRuby.

Helping the JVM Into the 21st Century. Friday, October 14, 2011. Why Clojure Doesn't Need Invokedynamic (Unless You Want It to be More Awesome). This was originally posted as a comment on @fogus. S blog post " Why Clojure doesn’t need invokedynamic, but it might be nice. I figured it's worth a top-level post here. Ok, there's some good points here and a few misguided/misinformed positions. I'll try to cover everything. Now, what about negative impacts to Clojure itself. The big perf gain was largely from...
Headius: Constant and Global Optimization in JRuby 1.7.1 and 1.7.2
http://blog.headius.com/2013/01/constant-and-global-optimization-in.html
Helping the JVM Into the 21st Century. Saturday, January 5, 2013. Constant and Global Optimization in JRuby 1.7.1 and 1.7.2. With every JRuby release, there's always at least a handful of optimizations. They range from tiny improvements in the compiler to perf-aware rewrites of core class methods, but they're almost always driven by real-world cases. Constants also.aren't. It is possible to redefine a constant, or define new constants deeper in a lexical or hierarchical strcture that mask earlier...Globa...

Helping the JVM Into the 21st Century. Wednesday, February 2, 2011. Working Around the Java Double.parseDouble Bug. You may have seen recently that Java suffers from a similar floating-point parsing bug. To the one that recently affected PHP users. The basic gist of it is that for this special 64-bit floating point value, the Java call Double.parseDouble("2.2250738585072012e-308") will get stuck in an infinite loop. Read the link above to understand what's happening. My first attempt was to simply normal...

Helping the JVM Into the 21st Century. Saturday, May 11, 2013. On Languages, VMs, Optimization, and the Way of the World. I shouldn't be up this late, but I've been doing lots of thinking and exploring tonight. 1: Types don't have to be static. However, this requires one key thing to really work well. 2: Types need to be predictable. 3: You can't cheat the CPU. Let's look at a few languages and where they fit. Java is statically typed and types are of a fixed shape. This is the ideal situation mostly...

Simplex for Ruby - Daniel Lucraft
http://danlucraft.com/blog/2013/12/ann-simplex-for-ruby
I’ve released a pure-Ruby implementation of the Simplex algorithm. For solving linear problems. It may be useful to you if you can only run Ruby, or if you want to learn about the Simplex algorithm from a simple implementation. I really really didn’t want to write my own LP solver implementation. If someone else told me they had done this, I would smirk. It’s a notoriously hard algorithm to implement correctly. Have you tried compiling them on Heroku. For Ruby 2.0. Max x y 2x y = 4 x 2y = 3 x, y = 0.
Learning about Redis through writing a Twitter clone - Daniel Lucraft
http://danlucraft.com/blog/2009/05/learning-about-redis-through-writing-a-twitter-clone
Learning about Redis through writing a Twitter clone. Is a fast key-value database by Salvatore Sanfilippo. With some new ideas. Sometimes it’s called a ‘data-structures database’ because it supports sets and lists. I spent a few hours this morning writing a Twitter clone that uses Redis as its datastore, which is now online at http:/ retwisrb.danlucraft.com. The code is available on Github. Requires list traversal by Redis. Would they be useful? Anyway, I encourage you to try Redis out soon.
How to use the new JRuby profiler - Daniel Lucraft
http://danlucraft.com/blog/2011/03/built-in-profiler-in-jruby-1.6
How to use the new JRuby profiler. The JRuby team released version 1.6. Yesterday, with lots of improvements and fixes. My contribution was extending the profiler with a graph mode and a Ruby API (with a lot of help from Headius. This profiler is built-in to the JRuby interpreter, no installation necessary! JRuby 1.5 included the. Option, which profiles all Ruby code run during the JRuby execution and outputs a flat profile:. In 160 there is now an additional profiling flag. How to profile blocks of code.

Raj's Reflections: EMML Best practices

Tuesday, April 7, 2009. Is a DSL (domain-specific language) for creating data-mashup services. Here are my thoughts on some of best-practices to follow for architecting EMML-based Mashup data services. Utility service layer contain reusable, non-business logic services. This avoids occurunces of common redundant logic in higher-level Mashup Services layer. Common candidates for common utility services are. Domain-specific authentication services [e.g. Salesforce / Google authentication]. EMML offers a ri...

Helping the JVM Into the 21st Century. Tuesday, October 24, 2017. Migrating to Java 9: Modules, Maven, OSGI, Travis CI. It has been too long! Today, after many years, I've got something I wanted to blog rather than tweet out in code snippits and screenshots: I'm starting to get my projects working with Java 9. Some years ago I started work on a library called InvokeBinder. It's also a nice, simple library to try to get into Java 9. Tool Support for Java 9 is Still Weak. I deferred exploring Java 9 until ...
