On their way from Mexico to wherever north of here they end up, a few of them generally spend their approximate two-week layover in our back yard. And right now that’s where they are. I count a female and two males this time–fewer than usual. But they are spectacular nonetheless. The Lazuli sighting reminds me that I have lots of seeding and planting to do before the predicted rains. So, I’m off to garden. Lazuli Bunting (Passerina amoena) by Doug Backlund. Today is February 7, 2012. You are getting very sleepy … and when I snap my fingers, you will believe it is. February 7, 2012. Today would have been the 100th birthday of my aunt and godmother, had she lived a few months longer. She spent her ninety-nine years, six months, and about two weeks in New Orleans minus the five months she existed in Arizona, following her narrow escape from hurricane Katrina. The smaller one is quite a bit smaller than most cooks would like, but it’s handy for warming dishes and surprisingly perfect for baking a pie crust. Absent burners, an unknowing dinner guest might mistake the Fabulous 400 for a china cabinet or a piano. In any case, it’s an amazing piece of modern architecture. And tagged Fabulous 400.

Turkey Soup with Rice, Mushrooms, and Sage. Turkey Soup with Rice, Mushrooms, and sage. 1 onion, finely chopped. 1 stalk celery, finely chopped. 25 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped. 5 cups turkey stock. 2/3 cup brown rice. 9 oz mushrooms, sliced. 7 oz cooked turkey. 3/4 cup heavy cream. Freshly grated Parmesan cheese, to serve. Slowly add the stock and stir well, scraping the bottom of the pan to mix in the flour. Bring to a boil.

This sea urchin shell was found while snorkeling in the British West Indies and is a daily reminder of how that trip started an important writer's journey. Everything from books to soup. Jaime Lee Gipe started writing in 2002 after a magical trip to Anguilla, a tiny island in the British West Indies. While there she began her first novel. She completed a second novel three years later. Arizona Press Club awarded Jaime a first place for feature writing in 2005, for essays published in Java Magazine.
