Monday, February 16, 2009. Long Term Ecological Research Cruise. Last week we received some happy visitors to station. These were the researchers and students of the annual Long Term Ecological Research (LTER). You can see more pictures of their cruise in the photo gallery. We were happy to have the battle-weary but still energetic crew stop at Palmer at the end of their cruise. They will be leaving several researchers with us to continue their work here and taking others home. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Friday, January 9, 2009. T plus 4 months. This is going to be a different sort of blog entry today - no pictures or long-winded descriptions of wildlife. Just me, being introspective. Certain of anything else? 7 months - long enough to count but not an eternity. Now I'm past the midway mark and in the downhill slide towards home. I left California September 9th and will leave "the ice" about April 9th. So, here goes: my thoughts on 4 months of life outside the US, in a place with 23 other people. Februar...

Tuesday, March 24, 2009. Leaving with the change in seasons. The change has been surprising fast. In January we were enjoying 22 hours of daylight and warm temperatures above freezing. Then, in February we started getting sunset before bedtime. Growing earlier by 6 minutes every day, the sunset was soon happening at dinnertime. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). March 22 - March 29. Monday, November 17, 2008. Animal of the Day: Southern Giant-Petrels. Yesterday afternoon I had the opportunity to accompany Scott Sternbach to Jacob's Island, about 2 miles from station. Jacob's is an amazing rock, so thick with moss and ridges of white granite that I felt I had been transported to the Scottish Moors. In the air, the 'Giants' are powerful and graceful. Their gorgeous wings look loose and organic, and they easily curl up. Fires in Southern California. This weekend I was glued to the news...

Monday, March 2, 2009. The messiness of raising chicks over with, the penguins here can return to fattening up for winter. Or, almost. The last thing on their summer itinerary is a new set of feathers. Most of the adelies on Torgerson look miserable. Huddled on the beach, silently looking at the water. And looking very very itchy. But, somehow, the Gentoo who decided to molt underneath my dorm window, managed to make it through with aplomb looking stylish the whole time. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Voyage of the Bloomingtonauts: August 2013

http://bloomingtonautica.blogspot.com/2013_08_01_archive.html

Voyage of the Bloomingtonauts. Monday, August 12, 2013. My Morning of Meteors. I tried to take a picture of my viewing spot, but it was still too dark outside. The sun wasn't visible at the horizon yet, but it seemed so bright outside to me after being in total darkness. A comfortable chair, a flashlight, and a thermos full of hot tea - that's all you need for optimum meteor viewing. Finally the sun rose enough to light the tops of the trees. I walked through a meadow of wildflowers. Summer at the Springs.

Voyage of the Bloomingtonauts: Christmas in Bloomington 2015

http://bloomingtonautica.blogspot.com/2015/02/christmas-in-bloomington-2015.html

Voyage of the Bloomingtonauts. Saturday, February 14, 2015. Christmas in Bloomington 2015. After a few days in Hillsville, we drove to Bloomington. I went on a walk in these beautiful frosty woods. Mom and I had a great time wandering around these woods by Lake Griffy. Even though it was 13 degrees out! I got to see some of my Bloomington friends while I was in town (although I didn't get a lot of pictures). David and I spent New Year's Eve in Indianapolis with John, Jennifer, and Rowan. Ah, family time.

Voyage of the Bloomingtonauts. Wednesday, July 02, 2014. My Birthday Weekend in D.C. I celebrated my 40th birthday in Washington, D.C. with David, John, Joe, Brenda, and Will, and it was awesome. We stayed at an Embassy Suites. With enormous koi in the lobby. It was fun just to walk around the neighborhood. And look at the buildings. Lots of trees and gardens. We had lunch at this great pizza place with delicious vegan pizza. Then we went to the National Museum of American History. We took only a very sm...

This is such a interesting read about the most fascinating woman. She was so much more than she appeared. I couldn’t put it down. Renee Perle was a Romanian Jewish girl living in Paris. It was there that she met Jacques-Henri Lartigue. They became lovers and she his muse. He called her ‘Parasol’. This is an extract from his diary. March 7, 1930. Can it really be her? Paris in the 1920's. Kees Van Dongen – Portrait of a woman with cigarette. Pablo Gargallo – Bronze. Artist’s model, painter, nightclu...

Tuesday, 18 August 2015. Best Of The Biennale. Picture the biggest exhibition youve ever seen and times it by 3. Then imagine theres two of them. Now throw in 89 pavilions representing an entire country each, and 44 collateral events across different locations, and there you have La Biennale di Venezia. Of course it would have been wholly inconceivable to get around it all during a 5 day stay, but here is a run down of the top ten tasty artefacts and experiences I consumed during my visit:.
