Goleta Water Online Portal - UI Fail
http://blog.nickburwell.com/blog/2013/02/goleta-water-online-portal-ui-fail
Experiences on the Front Lines of User Interfaces and Web Development. Goleta Water Online Portal - UI Fail. My water company finally enabled electronic billing and payments. I'm excited as it's the last paper bill I had to deal with (of course I still just paid online using free Chase bill pay, but it was prone to errors and forgetting to make the payment). Their website, which is powered by http:/ gwfathom.com/. Is just a mess. The signup process was error prone and painful:. Notice this is step 2.
Rails functional tests - unexpected 406 responses
http://blog.nickburwell.com/blog/2012/06/rails-functional-tests-unexpected-406
Experiences on the Front Lines of User Interfaces and Web Development. Rails functional tests - unexpected 406 responses. Fun discovery today of confusing behavior with Rails functional test framework (at least version 2.3.4):. Controller # # def create comment = Comment.create! Name = params[:name]) @result = { :id = comment.id } respond to do format format.xml { render } format.json { render :json = @result } end end. The above will fail on the assert response with a 406 instead of a 200 success.
How to Unit Test a custom Rails Form Builder
http://blog.nickburwell.com/blog/2012/04/how-to-unit-test-custom-rails-form
Experiences on the Front Lines of User Interfaces and Web Development. How to Unit Test a custom Rails Form Builder. I recently created my first custom Rails builder. It was very easy to do. First, create a class that inherits from ActionView: Helpers: FormBuilder and then you can either write your own methods or overwrite the built in text field, check box, radio button, etc. Class MyFirstFormBuilder ActionView: Helpers: FormBuilder. Form for @post, :builder = MyFirstFormBuilder do f %. Is key to allow ...
Hello New Blog
http://blog.nickburwell.com/blog/2013/05/hello-new-blog
Experiences on the Front Lines of User Interfaces and Web Development. I'm moving away from blogger. (Yes, I was using blogger. It was free, they managed the hosting and it was just one less thing to think about.) But I wanted more control over the layout, and I wanted to skin it in conjunction with my other site(s). Oh, I also plan to include more code snippets in future posts. So for now I'm trying out Octopress. Here is a code block So easy to write and format the text! Comments powered by Disqus.
Installing therubyracer 0.10.1 on OS X Mountain Lion
http://blog.nickburwell.com/blog/2013/01/installing-therubyracer-0101-on-os-x
Experiences on the Front Lines of User Interfaces and Web Development. Installing therubyracer 0.10.1 on OS X Mountain Lion. I was having trouble installing 0.10.1 version of therubyracer on Mountain Lion, because it depends on libv8 3.3.10.4. This is running Ruby 1.8.7. Upgrading to 0.11 worked but that was failing on other machines too so for now we needed to stick with 0.10.1. The solution was brilliantly documented here:. Note, if you use "sudo", but the option after the sudo:.

There is a nice Ruby gem that allows for automatic CSS Sprite generation: Sprite Factory. New work, project news and research. Building Site – Hardwick Hall. October 27, 2014. On Saturday, Katie and three of our friends agreed to come with me to see the Building Site. March 23rd, 2009 No Comments. In case you haven’t heard Internet Explorer 8 was released. You can download it here:. Http:/ www.microsoft.com/windows/internet-explorer/default.aspx. I played around with it a little last night. Unfortunately it’s the same user interface as IE7. Where IE8 really steps it up is with security and privacy. There’s a built in SmartScreen filter that notifies you if a page is known to be malicious. I recommend trying it at least to give you something to talk about this weekend!
