A mathematician at risk: On calculating Fibonacci numbers in C
http://blog.noblemail.ca/2013/01/on-calculating-fibonacci-numbers-in-c.html
A mathematician at risk. Once I was a mathematician, then I wrote PHP, now I analyze risk. Monday, January 28, 2013. On calculating Fibonacci numbers in C. A few months ago Evan Miller wrote an essay called The Mathematical Hacker. While an interesting post he does make a mistake when he gives the "proper way" to calculate the Fibonacci numbers. The reason why this works is because the last part of the expression (the. 05 - 0.5 × sqrt(5.0) /sqrt(5.0). Note I benchmarked these with: using. Alright, fair e...
A mathematician at risk: Your n is probably a lot smaller than you think
http://blog.noblemail.ca/2011/05/your-n-is-probably-lot-smaller-than-you.html
A mathematician at risk. Once I was a mathematician, then I wrote PHP, now I analyze risk. Thursday, May 19, 2011. Is probably a lot smaller than you think. If you have had a conversation with me about statistics you've probably gathered that I am a little hostile by the frequent use of p. Values. This is partly because it is very easy to confuse their meanings. And I'm very happy that the Bayesianists. And there's the issue that many people aren't reporting adjusted p. Value of 0.0003 (using a quick...
A mathematician at risk: Simple cross domain tracking
http://blog.noblemail.ca/2013/02/simple-cross-domain-tracking.html
A mathematician at risk. Once I was a mathematician, then I wrote PHP, now I analyze risk. Monday, February 04, 2013. Simple cross domain tracking. I hear of some really complicated schemes from time to time to track users across multiple domains that belong to a single site. While I'm sure they mostly work it seems like there's a simple way to do this that I assume many people are already using but is probably too boring to comment on. So, let's be boring for a moment. A mathematician at risk: How getting vaccinated protects others
http://blog.noblemail.ca/2009/10/how-getting-vaccinated-protects-others.html
A mathematician at risk. Once I was a mathematician, then I wrote PHP, now I analyze risk. Wednesday, October 28, 2009. How getting vaccinated protects others. In my last post. I explored a possible model for the flu and how different levels of immunity had social impact. Here I want to drill down more on how getting vaccinated not only protects yourself, but even those who aren't immune. Here I have a graph of the expected number of people to be infected for various immunization levels. However, not dri...
A mathematician at risk: Piece wise linear trends in the browser
http://blog.noblemail.ca/2013/02/piece-wise-linear-trends-in-browser.html
A mathematician at risk. Once I was a mathematician, then I wrote PHP, now I analyze risk. Sunday, February 10, 2013. Piece wise linear trends in the browser. Somehow I never blogged about the Javascript implementation of l1tf. Released by my friend Avi Bryant. And myself. l1tf is a way to find piece wise linear trends in time series data. Steven H. Noble. Where to wait for an elevator
http://www.johndcook.com/blog/2010/11/29/where-to-wait-for-an-elevator
John D. Cook. Where to wait for an elevator. Imagine a bank of three elevators along a wall. The elevators are in a straight line but they are not evenly spaced. Where do you stand in order to minimize the expected distance you’ll need to walk to catch the first elevator that arrives? This scenario comes from the opening paragraph of a paper. Distance and that the minimal average distance to the elevator is in fact achieved by standing at the median. This problem illustrates three optimization theorems:.
K-Nearest Neighbors: dangerously simple | mathbabe

Exploring and venting about quantitative issues. K-Nearest Neighbors: dangerously simple. K-Nearest Neighbors: dangerously simple. April 4, 2013. Cathy O'Neil, mathbabe. After all, a good data scientist is hard to find. I’m here to say, it’s not clear that’s possible. Even the simplest algorithm, like k-Nearest Neighbor (k-NN), can be naively misused by someone who doesn’t understand it well. Let me explain. Holy shit, that was simple! Mathbabe, what’s your problem? The devil is all in the detail of.
Attaboy - A political map of Canada
http://attaboy.ca/archives/2011/04/001067.php
April 5, 2011 at 10 PM. A political map of Canada. In countries whose politicians are elected to represent regions or districts, elections are times of maps, maps and more maps. In the USA, Canada and the UK, geographical maps are the most common visualization tool for predicting and showing electoral results. This isn’t surprising since national and regional maps are immediately familiar to people, and therefore have a low barrier to comprehension. 8220;A cartogram is a map in which some thematic mappin...
Kaffee und: [Kuchen]: Magnificent Moscow
http://blog.fitzell.ca/2014/05/magnificent-moscow.html
Monday, 19 May 2014. Day 49 - Moscow - 17,160 km travelled. Moscow has been awesome. I think we both expected to like it but were expecting it to be quite grey, bleak and dramatic more in a post-Soviet kind of way. In fact, it's a really beautiful city with a vibrant cafe culture, lots of lovely parks, and amazing architecture on top of the cathedrals and museums it's famous for. For me, our few days here have been one of the highlights of our trip. Yes, next door! Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).
Kaffee und: [Kuchen]: June 2010
http://blog.fitzell.ca/2010_06_01_archive.html
Friday, 25 June 2010. The Trouble with Twitter. The thing about Twitter is it's so easy. Sitting down to write a blog post takes time and effort. I want to develop a thesis, establish a reasonable structure, and edit the thing until it flows and becomes a pleasure to read. Ignoring the time spent in advance thinking about the topic, a well-written non-trivial blog post might take me an hour to write ( some. Throwing out undeveloped thoughts with everyone else. Kaffee und: [Kuchen]: July 2010
http://blog.fitzell.ca/2010_07_01_archive.html
Friday, 9 July 2010. Off to the races. It was fun though with everyone in their posh summer dresses, running back and forth from the track to the tables to the betting windows. And we even managed to win enough to just about cover admission, food, and drinks. Not bad for an evening's entertainment. So of course, now that I have a fool-proof guaranteed system. We're going to have to head back more often to capitalize on it. Or. maybe I should quite while I'm ahead. Links to this post. Friday, 2 July 2010.
Kaffee und: [Kuchen]: The long train west, part 2
http://blog.fitzell.ca/2014/05/the-long-train-west-part-2.html
Thursday, 15 May 2014. The long train west, part 2. Day 45, 8:00 am local time - Train 81, 1,419 km from Moscow - 15,894. I haven't a clue where we are. All seemed good at about 3:00 this morning when we stopped in what was presumably Yekaterinburg, though we were awoken there by someone trying to open our compartment door and thought our days of privacy might be over. They seemed to quickly move on to the next compartment, however, and the train carried on into the night. They had an English menu, but i...

Wednesday, 14 May 2014. The long train west. 44, 11:20 am. Time - Train 81, 3,006 km from. We left Irkutsk at 1:17 am local time yesterday, though the clocks in the train station all said 20:17 because all trains in Russia run on Moscow time. This is particularly confusing when, as in our case, the time change spans midnight and you need to book the train for a different date than your actual departure. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Kaffee und: [Kuchen]: When to use a Seaside Component?
http://blog.fitzell.ca/2009/05/when-to-use-seaside-component.html
Friday, 8 May 2009. When to use a Seaside Component? A recent StackOverflow question. Asked "When to use Seaside components, and when to use simple render objects? This is a common challenge for new Seaside users (with the additional wrinkle of whether they should be implement a Brush thrown in for extra confusion). While we're on the topic, asking. And answering Seaside questions. Might help gain us some exposure and legitimacy. I actively monitor the RSS feed for Seaside questions. Up to a new class.

A mathematician at risk. Once I was a mathematician, then I wrote PHP, now I analyze risk. Saturday, March 22, 2014. How often should you retrain your model? I think about this when I see competing approaches to model training. Many software engineers seem to have come to a different conclusion. Here the ultimate solution seems to be build a tool that just keeps retraining monthly/weekly/daily. (Ok, I don’t actually believe anyone is advocating daily. But the hyperbole makes the point&#...The most common...
