Monday, January 22, 2018. Beware the Near Enemies (In Life and Tech). I’ve been in the tech industry since I was just a wee lass. Last year, I took a break from tech, and decided I wanted to understand the inner circuity of my mind. I eventually found myself on a 4 month Buddhist retreat. First, some background. Disclosure: I am just a Student Buddhist, so please feel free to research further everything I discuss here. Buddhism has a set of virtues called The Four Immeasurables. So here’s the thing...

Friday, May 3, 2013. Managing history in Backbone widgets with jQuery BBQ. In my last blog post. I talked about the two different Backbone architectures we're experimenting with at Coursera. 1) single page web apps, where Backbone takes care of serving particular views for given URLs, and 2) JS widgets, where we write. S with particular data attributes into our HTML, and a JS module finds all of them on the page and turns them into Backbone views. That meant that we lost the ability for users to use the ...

http://blog.pamelafox.org/2013_03_01_archive.html

Sunday, March 31, 2013. In our small team of 20 engineers at Coursera. We've been talking a lot lately about what our approach to the world of "open source" should be, both now and long term. We're all interested in the idea of open-sourcing parts of our code, and we're motivated by a few main reasons:. We are heavy users of open-source code in our Coursera codebase, and we would like to give back. Documentation suggestions, and talks on how we use them. Why not open source? After she deleted a popular g...

Towards more "Yes, and"s and less "but"s

http://blog.pamelafox.org/2015/04/towards-more-yes-ands-and-less-buts.html

Thursday, April 23, 2015. Towards more "Yes, and"s and less "but"s. Today we had a little Improv 101 workshop at Khan Academy, led by our colleague Kitt Hirasaki. I'm interested in improv both because I find it incredibly fun and stimulating, and also because I'm interested in the way it can help me improve the way I deal with every day life. One of the great games we played was "Yes, and.". Since it promotes creativity and collaborative, the "yes, and" game has since been picked up by entrepreneurs and ...

Exporting a Google Spreadsheet as JSON

http://blog.pamelafox.org/2013/06/exporting-google-spreadsheet-as-json.html

Friday, June 7, 2013. Exporting a Google Spreadsheet as JSON. But now that those are deprecated, I use a Google Apps Script. Here are the steps for using the script:. Create a new spreadsheet, and put your data in columns. Give each column a name, and choose carefully. Since this name will be used for JSON keys, the best names are lowercase, whitespace-less, and descriptive. Freeze the first row with the column names. The image below shows a spreadsheet of books on my reading list:. Into the code editor.

What makes a good "developer experience"?

http://blog.pamelafox.org/2011/04/what-makes-good-developer-experience.html

Thursday, April 28, 2011. What makes a good "developer experience"? Short version: To help me answer this question, fill out this survey. Just like with user products, we want the "developer experience". Where do they go when they need help? How easy is it for them to develop arbitrary apps on top of it? Can they use it successfully in their preferred environment? Those are the sort of questions that we need to ask to figure out what the developer experience is like. Why do I bring this up? To discuss th...

Nael El Shawwa - My thoughts on technology and web applications. A Software Engineer's thoughts, rantings, and other comments. Tuesday, August 24, 2010. Don't tell me your TV supports Twitter. This is a bad idea:. As of today, Bada's App. Whichever. Why would you buy a Samsung then? I wouldn't want to manage a different set of Apps through a different market place than the one I am using now. Apple has iAds, Google has AdWords. What does Samsung have? I haven't tried this yet, and I don't have an iPad still, however this video is just screaming at me to go buy an iPad just for this app. It's kind of like how Shazam and UrbanSpoon apps in the iPhone ads were the "kick over fence" for me. Anyway, congratulations to Mike McCue and the Flipboard team. All the best....Monda...

Nael El Shawwa - My thoughts on technology and web applications. A Software Engineer's thoughts, rantings, and other comments. Saturday, August 14, 2010. Yahoo's culture vs. Google's culture. Two interesting articles I have read in the past week had to do with Yahoo's "hacker-centric" culture - or lack of. Two different views, one from Paul Graham's "What happened to Yahoo. Post and the second from Ryan Grove's "What's happening at Yahoo! These articles got me interested in comparing both Yahoo! First in...

Nael El Shawwa - My thoughts on technology and web applications. A Software Engineer's thoughts, rantings, and other comments. Friday, September 03, 2010. Don't tell me your TV supports Twitter (Part 2). In Part 1 I ranted about the Samsung commercial that I caught on TV. So here are somethings that I think will change:. Channels vs. Apps. Little Did She Know. Sunday, January 01, 2017. My goal for this year is to post ever single day, this is strictly a personal challenge and something I really miss doing. It's been years and I'm not even sure why I stopped. We had a great New Year's Eve. We were invited to a friends house and Isadora was so excited that there was a kitty there. But there was also a fire and lots of room to run around outside. It is still very warm here so it wasn't even really chilly. But the fire was nice. I decided to d...
