science-class.net blog: A new start
http://blog.science-class.net/2016/08/a-new-start.html
Musings and reflections of a middle school science teacher. Tuesday, August 9, 2016. One of the best things about teaching is the fresh start we get each year. No matter how good or not-so-good it was last year, it's all new again. Full of opportunities. We started back today; kids will be back on the 17th. Two of my goals for this year:. Try some different forms of formative assessment. I've fallen into a rut. I especially want to work on using exit tickets to inform my instruction. New Year - Finding n...

Musings and reflections of a middle school science teacher. Friday, March 25, 2016. My school has a lovely tradition called "Grand Day." The Thursday before Good Friday, grandparents are invited to school with their grandcildren. There is a nice breakfast and fine arts performances for them. In the classroom, we design a lesson that the kids can do with their grandparents. In my class, we do a variation of Bunnycopters. Copters because it is right before Easter. Thursday, March 17, 2016. Musings and reflections of a middle school science teacher. Tuesday, December 29, 2015. Catching Up and Stars. We rounded out our investigation of the universe with a study of stars. My lessons and activities can be downloaded here. I'm not satisfied with this unit, and will be looking to beef it up next year; particularly the study of the a star life cycle. Something to do this summer! However, our construction of the H-R diagram really helps students how temperature, color, and size are related. The fi...

http://blog.science-class.net/2015/08/teamwork.html
Musings and reflections of a middle school science teacher. Sunday, August 23, 2015. Students in my science classes work in teams. Although my students come to me familiar with the idea of "group work" they still need practice with the idea of working as a team. I have to teach what this looks like during the first week of school. There are a number of great teamwork lessons easily available on the web. I have used one called Marble Ramps. For the past few years. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). CSI S...
science-class.net blog: Getting Started
http://blog.science-class.net/2015/09/getting-started.html
Musings and reflections of a middle school science teacher. Tuesday, September 29, 2015. One of my procedures is what I call the "start-of-class" procedures. The first thing I teach my new students each year is how to come into the classroom and what to do to get ready for the day. When students walk in the room there is a PowerPoint projected on the board. It looks pretty much the same every day -. What to take out (homework, iPad, etc). Task for the day. Upcoming tests or quizes. My journal questions c...

Musings and reflections of a middle school science teacher. Saturday, November 5, 2016. Interactive graphic organizers, 3D graphic organizers, "foldables" - whatever you call them - are a favorite tool of many teachers. I have a love-hate relationship with them myself. I love them when they are used judiciously and with the intent to review or reinforce a concept. I hate them when they are over-used, take the place of an investigation, or become a "craftivity.". I have created a large number of content o...
