Angkor, Day 1. May 14, 2012. It turns out I had a little bonus time here at the end of the schedule, so I bought a three day pass for the park and I’m taking a “free day” in between each temple day. Another cooking class is on Wednesday! I hired the tuk-tuk driver, Kean, that I used from the airport. His English was understandable and I had a good first impression of him. That says a lot around here! I tell him what time to pick me up at the hotel and off we go for the day! Ta Som, late 12th century.

Full Moon in Hoi An. May 6, 2012. Fresh doughnuts and sweet fritters are popular. Kem means ice cream (good word to know if you’re traveling in Vietnam this time of year! Lanterns are the big thing in Hoi An. Be prepared, though, for a hard sell in this tourist town. The vendors will be calling out to you all day and night. Angkor, Day 2. May 16, 2012. Morning at the south entrance to Angkor Thom. Another representation of the myth The Churning of the Ocean of Milk. Some of the deva heads (here) and the aspara heads on the other side have been restored. Some of the many face towers at Bayon, each face pointing in a cardinal direction. The larger temple sites that I’m now viewing have more and better preserved bas-relief carvings. Most of them depict battles but some show some daily life and spiritual beliefs.

Banteay Srei | This Journey

May 18, 2012. Banteay Srei is one of the few temples still surrounded by a moat, filled with pink lotus flowers. Most temples are surrounded by a wall. The temples of Angkor are organized a little bit like a national park in the U.S. Some have informational signs like this one, many trees have small signs with their botanical identification, there are uniformed “rangers” that check tickets, etc. The APSARA web site.
