Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. Inner sourcing to open sourcing. Leave a comment ». Ahmet Alp Balkan wrote an interesting piece on what you should open source at your company recently. I like his assertion that anything you’d likely need at another job should be open sourced. Some other influential programmers have asserted more aggressive stances. On this, but I think Ahmet’s idea is a good start. You should check his article. Out now if you haven’t seen it already. The process generally inv...

Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. BASH shell navigation hacks. Leave a comment ». I love the shell for the most part. Modern systems ship with the fantastic (for the most part) BASH shell, which includes tab completion, sophisticated line editing modes and many nice usability features (try using a shell without history or line editing support and see what a difference this makes). There are still some places where the shell falls down in my opinion though ( ahem. Going back to my own set of hac...

Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. Archive for February 2013. Google Glass – enabling new layers of context. If you’ve followed me for a while on this blog you know I’ve written about some different UI/UX paradigms in the past, mostly focusing on the rise of tablets and touch computing and the passing of the stylus into niche areas and near obscurity. Google did this with search, Apple did it with the iPhone. I think Google is going to do it again with the Glass. Having such immediate access to ...

Functional programming and the death of the Unix Way | Dan Newcome, blog

Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. Functional programming and the death of the Unix Way. Small tools, each doing one thing well, has been the call of the Unix Way since its inception some 40 years ago. However, if you look at even the basic tools that ship with a modern Unix (Linux, BSD) many of them have an abundance of options and layers of additional functionality added over the years. What would a programming environment look like that embodies the original ideals of the Unix Way? Maybe gett...

Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. Consuming XML Web services in Backbone.js using Jath. This article is getting a lot of traffic lately so I want to draw attention to a discussion in the comments. Backbone no longer requires the patch that I have described below to work with XML. However the use of Jath to parse the results remains the same. Check out this article. We recently released an initial version of our API. Once this change is made we can call fetch() on a Backbone model and call an XM...

Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. Input paradigms for wearable computing. Leave a comment ». I’ve been tracking various input methods over the course of this blog, providing commentary on tablets, the death (and possible rebirth) of the stylus, touch computing and now with the Google Glass – wearable computing. Anyone who has followed the wearable computing space for a while will notice that most adherents use a device called a “twiddler”. We seem to have gotten used to people roaming the stree...

Dan Newcome, blog. I'm bringing cyber back. Goodbye Posterous – a migration story. Leave a comment ». Many of you know (or should know, if you have anything still on Posterous! That Posterous is shutting its doors. Following its acquisition by Twitter. I was one of the first Posterous users in 2008, and they even gave me many more blogs than were usually allowed on the service at the time. Heady days, those. Anyway Posterous turned out not to be the ideal host for my blogs, and I continued with WordPress.
