ellipses | Three-Cornered Things
http://blog.zacharyabel.com/tag/ellipses
Zachary Abel's Math Blog. January 2, 2013. This is the 4th and last installment in the current series on mini-golf and ellipse geometry. See the previous ones here: #1. We must settle one more question to round out our elliptical arc: Why does light, when shot from one focus of an ellipse-shaped mirrored room, reflect back to the other focus? To answer this question, we’ll need a Fact, a Formalism, and a Fairy Tale. Recall that, in the previous post. So that the total length of broken path F. Which is de...
How Unilluminating! | Three-Cornered Things
http://blog.zacharyabel.com/2012/09/how-unilluminating
Zachary Abel's Math Blog. September 2, 2012. Said differently, consider the room as a large hole of mathematical mini-golf, where the locations of the ball (just one point) and cup (also just a point) are predetermined. Your goal is to pick a direction to hit the ball, hoping that it will reflect off the walls and eventually find its way to the cup. Is a hole-in-one always possible? With these rules in place, it turns out that it. Possible to be left in the dark, or to make a hole-in-one impossible!

Dandelin spheres | Three-Cornered Things
http://blog.zacharyabel.com/tag/dandelin-spheres
Zachary Abel's Math Blog. Tag Archives: Dandelin spheres. What Makes Ellipses… Ellipses? October 1, 2012. Last time we used wild properties of ellipses to build some really easy—and some really devilish—golf courses. Specifically, I claimed that every ellipse has two magical points F. Such that a ray from F. Always bounces off the ellipse and lands precisely at F. And furthermore, this path always has the same length. Why does this happen? And how do we find these foci? Is always the same! So the sum XF.

I am a scientist interested in Theory of Computer Science and Discrete Math. My main interest are geometric graphs. I study problems such as how to embed graphs, or how many crossing-free graphs exist. So why a blog? Hmm, basically I would like to find out what I have to say and if there are people interested in it. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Sigmajs and cytoscape.js are targeted for displaying graphs. However what I saw from the examples I liked d3.js most (I also prefer vecto...Package&#...

Zachary Abel's Math Blog. New Sculpture Writeup: Penny Pincher. January 25, 2016. Check out the latest addition to my sculpture page: Penny Pincher. Made with more than four thousand binder clips and two thousand pennies, this monstrosity stands at 35 pounds and just under 2.5 feet, but it is perfectly content standing on three flimsy-looking legs. The flat image above doesn’t do justice to the three-dee-ness of the sculpture, so here’s a way around(hah! Head over to the full writeup. December 11, 2015.

Monday, December 1, 2014. Reflections on USV vs. a16z. Decided to share these thoughts from March 2014:[1]. I was reflecting on Fred Wilson’s comment. Where he analogized Union Square Ventures. USV) to a boutique clothing store and Andreessen Horowitz. A16z) to Walmart. That suggestion sets up a jarring contrast but I believe it’s deceptive. Discussion about the case on a16z. Brought out some of the reason why the analogy is imperfect, but we never really covered why. A16z is a bit of a strange animal.
