Two meetings, 40 years, and a journey of hope. | SeanMcP Blogfeast
https://blogfeast.wordpress.com/2015/05/09/two-meetings-40-years-and-a-journey-of-hope
Musings on Faith, Education, Arts, Sport and Travel. Two meetings, 40 years, and a journey of hope. May 9, 2015. This is the tale of two meetings and what happened in between them. It is October 1974 and I am sitting at a shoogly table in the back room of what was once a plumber’s shop on the Southside of Edinburgh. In later years, there would be many more folk I would have cause to thank and to celebrate the fact I had the chance to know and work beside them: Bob Shirley, Allan Lawson, Valli Shirley, St...
Making a difference | SeanMcP Blogfeast

Musings on Faith, Education, Arts, Sport and Travel. April 20, 2015. The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena is an imposing sight. Think of a quarry, roofed over, and with additional facilities, and you’ll be close to imagining it accurately. As someone who joined the SNP in the 1970s, such occasions still seem a little surreal with the memory of similar manifesto launches being performed in pokey upstairs rooms or basements, accompanied by a deafening roar of apathy from even the Scottish media.
Marvellous! | SeanMcP Blogfeast

Musings on Faith, Education, Arts, Sport and Travel. April 10, 2015. Southport and Birkdale cc. I love cricket, I love words and writing, I love broadcasting. Richie Benaud excelled in each of these disciplines and was utterly unique. He’s been a role model and inspiration for all of my life in those areas. So when I say I’m going to miss him dreadfully, I really mean it. I only encountered him once. After one of the Cavaliers games, when I had hassled my way to as many player autographs as possible, I w...
Feeling the way through the dark | SeanMcP Blogfeast

Musings on Faith, Education, Arts, Sport and Travel. Feeling the way through the dark. May 11, 2015. When I was growing up, the Blitz in Liverpool was well known to me which is odd, because I was born in Edinburgh, some 200 miles to the north, in 1952 ten years after the last bombs fell. So my mother’s stories related the ‘mundane’ every day realities of living in war time: feeling your way home along the wall in the total darkness of blackout; the move from ‘under the table’ to cellar to ’Anderson shelt...
Saving Ryan’s Daughter | SeanMcP Blogfeast

Musings on Faith, Education, Arts, Sport and Travel. Saving Ryan’s Daughter. March 31, 2015. Seán Mac an tSíthigh. The world of film has come a long way in little more than a century. At the start, viewers were amazed to see scratchy depictions of moving monochrome figures, then talkies led a move towards more realism, and now we watch films in which Computer Generated Imagery makes anything appear possible – on screens from multiplex to phone sized. His forte was the vastness of the background against w...

The view from the hills: July 2013
http://ghmltn.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Friday, 19 July 2013. I originally posted this in 2011 (from a British perspective). Tonight, as Detroit files for bankruptcy it seems worth revisiting it. At a time where public sector pensions have been at the heart of our national debate its worth thinking about what happened in the United States. Why? Because expensive and outdated pension schemes have destroyed the auto manufacturing industry in Detroit and with it the city! Detroit and the...

The view from the hills: June 2014
http://ghmltn.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Friday, 20 June 2014. The identity and the future of the nation. Last night I watched Prof Tom Devine, one of Scotland's greatest living historians, on TV. I like Tom Devine and I like what he has to say. He has as fine an understanding of Scotland and what it is to be Scottish as anyone. Talking about the Independence Referendum we take part in, in three month's time he said, "This is about the identity and the future of the nation". Still rele...

Lallands Peat Worrier: The light on the hill
http://lallandspeatworrier.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-light-on-hill.html
Cogitations from a Cranachan Cairn. The light on the hill. While Andrew Wilson has been away on his summer holidays, the folk at the Scotland on Sunday. Asked me to fill in a couple of columns. Last week I wrote. About feeling a bit frazzled by Scottish politics, and the unremitting pace of stuff. The theme also came up at the Traverse in Edinburgh, at playwright David Greig's Two Minute Manifestos. Having looked backwards last week, today, in my final fill-in column in the Scotland on Sunday. Seriously ...
The view from the hills: April 2012
http://ghmltn.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Monday, 9 April 2012. Public sector pensions is not the issue! All power to Steve Webb with his work on looking for alternative pension methods for British workers in the years to come. This is the real issue, not public sector pensions. Final salary pensions are dead. They have been for over a decade now. The public sector unions are either being King Canute like or don't understand the economics of providing pensions - or both! Where the union...
The view from the hills: May 2013

The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Tuesday, 21 May 2013. The Four Freedoms of liberalism. Tonight I just wanted to record some important words that I feel need spoken again. In January 1941 America's greatest president, Franklin Roosevelt, delivered his State of the Union address to Congress. It was to be one of the great speeches and one of the most important expositions of political liberalism. It is known as The Four Freedoms Speech. Jobs for those who can work. We should plan...
The view from the hills: The SNP's double paradox
http://ghmltn.blogspot.com/2015/07/the-snps-double-paradox.html
The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Tuesday, 7 July 2015. The SNP's double paradox. It has been interesting to see those celebrating the Greek vote on their financial crisis are a mixture of various nationalists, and the hard left and Greens. This highlights a paradox as far as the SNP are concerned. The SNP are not a hard left party and their anti-austerity line has been no different than social democrats'. In fact their anti-austerity line has been more talk than action. Cllr Fr...
The view from the hills: November 2012
http://ghmltn.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Thursday, 29 November 2012. Who is the best Doctor? It is a great TV programme, loved the world over by millions including me. Dr Who is a marvellous creation and thanks to re-generation can keep on re-inventing itself and changing the actor who plays the lead role. But which Doctor is the best Doctor? For what it is worth here, in reverse order is how I rate them. What do you think? The current Doctor does a decent job and is a credible Doctor&...
The view from the hills: April 2013
http://ghmltn.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
The view from the hills. Of life, politics and other stuff. Sunday, 21 April 2013. So Scotland, which way shall we go? Straight ahead carrying on much as we are now, or off one way to independence or another to constitutional change but within the UK? This is a clever conceit and one that deserves serious consideration. It is all the more clever because it is impossible to prove or disprove. In that sense I need to go with my gut here. However, I think it is important to test and challenge th...Given the...

Musings on Faith, Education, Arts, Sport and Travel. March 15, 2018. Video replays are all the rage in football at the moment, and none more so than those relating to former Liverpool star, Jamie Carragher, spitting, after a Man Utd v Liverpool game. I could go for the full VAR post match discussion (a sign if ever there was one that VAR seldom settles arguments once and for all) but I’m loathe to go over that old ground: Did he wind down the window so he could spit? Was he aiming at the girl? A crowd of...

Simple story of life | …..just a story goes…..
Simple story of life. 8230;just a story goes…. Perpisahan adalah Awal (Persahabatan). November 20, 2015.

Brownie, you're doin' a heck of a job. Monday, November 19, 2007. Chuch Norris recently endorsed Mike Huckabee for the Republican nomination. To celebrate this most highly regarded endorsement, Huckabee and Chuck-a-bee (as he now prefers to be called) put together this somber campaign ad:.
