A blog about our experiences in Sweden. Sunday, July 27, 2014. Lasius colony update (island outworld). Since the colony moved into the nest in February. It has grown quite a bit. It is even more difficult to estimate the number of individuals but I would guess between 600 and 800. They are also currently occupying 5 chambers in the nest but will sometimes move into a 6th just for a few hours. Front view of nest (5 chambers occupied). Recent move to this chamber. After a long cold winter spent in the refrigerator (winter 2012-2013) we placed them in a new nest and they started to increase in number. Mit dem Wohnwagen hatten sie sich auf den Weg zu uns gemacht, um eine Woche mit uns zu verbringen. Nachdem ich mich nun ausführlich darüber ausgelassen habe, warum es Wissenschaftlern nicht um Ruhm und Ehre geht, möchte ich auf zwei Dinge zu sprechen kommen, die unter Wissenschaftlern doch so etwas wie Ruhm und Ehre mit sich bringen, oder besser gesagt Prestige: Forschungsgelder und das Veröffentlichen von Artikeln in bestimmten Zeitschriften. Die zweite Art, in der Wissenschaft zu Prestige zu kommen, ist, in Zeitschriften wie Nature.

Dienstag, 17. Juni 2014. Auf dem Weg von der Hochzeit zum Flughafen haben wir am Sonntag noch einen Abstecher zum Himmelsscheibenmuseum in Nebra gemacht. Nebra liegt im Burgenland inmitten von Feldern und Hügeln und wäre wahrscheinlich immer noch ein verschlafenes Nest, wenn es nicht vor einigen Jahren archäologischen Weltruhm erlangt hätte.
