AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Sunday, April 5, 2015. Beyond the State of Nature. In watching the Jackson lecture and doing a preliminary read-through of the materials for this week, one thing that has been on my mind is whether we will ever reach any kind of 'equilibrium' in the balance of power. Then again, I think of resource scarcity and religious extremism and other factors that polarize us, and then my...

AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Sunday, April 5, 2015. Humanitarianism binds us all! Is it the only thing that can bind us all together? Do we remain still in the Hobbes state of nature unless in times of great need? Is that what can bind us all together? If so, why? Why should it take something at Humanitarianism- needed level to bind us all together? What would that look like? Ben- I guess the question I ha...

SISG 760- International Studies- Group 4: The Strange Bedfellows: Chinese and American Foreign Policy in East Asia

SISG 760- International Studies- Group 4. Sunday, April 5, 2015. The Strange Bedfellows: Chinese and American Foreign Policy in East Asia. Balance of power politics in East Asia is a topic of special interest within the context of the rise and fall of great powers like the United States and China. Marc Beeson’s article, “Hegemonic transition in East Asia? These power dynamics have led some to refer to the competition between the United States and China as “the cool war.”. This leads us to a more importan...

AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Wednesday, April 15, 2015. I think if I could suggest one final module for this course, it would be one that focuses on using what we've discussed regarding authority, power, interests, and ideas to predict state reactions to different situations. What is the intent of the actor? Are they acting out of self-interest or are they open to collaboration? What happens when Scully an...

AU International Studies: Blog Group 1: What is Power?
http://bloggroup1temmr.blogspot.com/2015/04/what-is-power.html
AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Tuesday, April 14, 2015. One thing that I didn't gather from the debate was a working definition of power. What is power? Is it tethered to wealth? Ability to withstand a catastrophic event (e.g., a strong infrastructure)? Abundance of natural resources? Maybe it is a combination of all of this, plus more? Wednesday, April 15, 2015 at 10:07:00 AM EDT. Taking a look at the course.

AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Monday, April 6, 2015. Taking a look at the course. If one subscribes to the Hobbes’ view, wouldn't a monumental global threat still result in the latter? Wouldn't states still be struggling, perhaps with even more fervor, to survive? AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Saturday, February 28, 2015. There are laws that govern this (in the U.S.). These laws seem to be missing in the international realm. As a general rule in the U.S., states cannot simply contract private actors to carry out their police functions. Wednesday, February 25, 2015. Would this not imply that legitimacy almost needs this acceptance? If true, then it would make sense th...

AU International Studies: Blog Group 1. Blog forum for students enrolled in the American University Spring 2015 SISG-760 course. Monday, April 13, 2015. During the debate this week and during class, it came to my attention that I could see the argument for 3 of the 4 groups. While I truly believe that Climate Change is occurring, I do not believe this is our greatest threat to US power. With that said, I am undecided about the other three groups. Let me explain.
