Blog Meridian: "A track-repairer somewhere in the orbit of the earth":Thoreau and late capitalism
http://blogmeridian.blogspot.com/2012/07/track-repairer-somewhere-in-orbit-of.html
Wednesday, July 11, 2012. A track-repairer somewhere in the orbit of the earth":Thoreau and late capitalism. A stretch of the railroad between Fitchburg and Concord. Image found here. One would think that there'd be no need to write something like a post with the title that this one has: that a fairly attentive reading of Walden. Or, less directly, "Life Without Principle" would reveal to the reader pretty clearly what the Concord Curmudgeon would have to say about such things. However, as I dare say you...
Blog Meridian: Carlos Fuentes, 1928-2012
http://blogmeridian.blogspot.com/2012/05/carlos-fuentes-1928-2012.html
Tuesday, May 15, 2012. Carlos Fuentes, 1928-2012. Fuentes, standing in front of the Aztec Sun Calendar at the National Museum of Anthropology, Mexico City. Image found here. Carlos Fuentes died today in his home town of Mexico City. He was 83. Here. Is a brief obituary in today's Los Angeles Times. His passing means that of that generation of Latin American writers of the "Boom" years of the '60s and '70s, only Colombia's Gabriel García Márquez and Peru's Mario Vargas Llosa are still alive. Still, strugg...

The Postman Always Rings Twice. 8221;Everybody comes to Rick’s” . . . but why? 8221;The Circle Is Now Complete”: Revenge of the Sith. And some random remarks on the whole darned series. A note on Psycho.
Blog Meridian: Just start calling me Rip Van Meridian
http://blogmeridian.blogspot.com/2012/04/just-start-calling-me-rip-van-meridian.html
Sunday, April 22, 2012. Just start calling me Rip Van Meridian. Your correspondent's arrival to last Tuesday's department meeting? Naah- it's really Tompkins H. Matteson's Rip Van Winkle's Return. 1860) Image found here. There's a strange poetry of confluence between that impulse and the upcoming annual colo-rectal exams I'll soon begin undergoing, but I'll leave that for another time.). Mind you, I don't feel nostalgia for those days, enjoyable as they were- after all, I wrote a fair number of terms pap...
Blog Meridian: Some notes on the opening of The Conversation
http://blogmeridian.blogspot.com/2012/07/some-notes-on-opening-of-conversation.html
Saturday, July 14, 2012. Some notes on the opening of The Conversation. Over at his excellent film blog, Scanners. Jim Emerson has an ongoing feature called the Opening Shots Projects. Here's its rationale. 2) The opening shot (or opening sequence) is the most important part of the movie. at least until you get to the final shot. (And in good movies, the two are often related.). The opening shot can tell us a lot about how to interpret what follows. It can even be the whole movie in miniature. Via the fi...

327 Market: The 327 Gazetteer
http://327market.blogspot.com/2006/09/327-gazetteer.html
Wednesday, September 20, 2006. Originally uploaded by camille94019. A while ago John. The Idea of Place and my Imagination. On the Names of Places. I don't use real names because I wish to talk about real people and places without blowing anyone's privacy. I chose names for places that reflect what they symbolize to me, often punning the original meaning or referencing something about a place. Sometimes I use mutliple names for the same place, and I'll note that in the individual entries.

Thursday, September 28, 2006. The Hose Gazetteer Entry. I read Jack London's White. Ugly strip malls, ugly condos, ugly developments, traffic, smog, ugly office buildings and overpriced parking. Abundant burritos, The Martin Luther King Library (with embedded art), two blocks of ancient downtown that date to the Judge's time (if you shut your eyes and concentrate very hard you might be able smell the memory of the citrus trees). Blog Meridian
Sunday, September 02, 2012. Hello, all. It's been fairly busy around here as the new semester approached and has now arrived and, moreover, combined with a dearth of much of anything "interesting" to pass along in this space. However, some engaging books, films and music have arrived here at the Meridian manse, and I will be posting about them in the next few days and weeks. What follows is a tinkered-with and expanded-upon version of my review on Amazon. I confess that a large part of my frustration wit...

Meridian Wellness Blog
Friday, August 20, 2010. As a followup to my last post on Decompression.interestingly enough, the primary U.S. company Axiom Worldwide, LLC manufacturing the DRX9000 machine has gone into receivership. As well, the Low Back Clinic investigated in the CBC report has changed its name to Premium Spinal Care. Things that make you go hmm? Again, I do believe that decompression (aka traction), can certainly be helpful. It's just the high cost of treatment that I'm not in agreement with. Tuesday, March 30, 2010.
