I Am Not A Drain On Society. The original title of this blog came after I was ranted at in the student union by someone who felt that students were a 'drain on society'. It's stuck since then. The joy of birthdays. Today I turned 30. Ive been working as a doctor for just over 2 years now and am watching the NHS crumble under our feet. Who even knows what the next 2 years hold, but it bet the NHS is barely recognisable in 30 years time (Ill probably still be working since we cant retire until aged 68).

I Am Not A Drain On Society. The original title of this blog came after I was ranted at in the student union by someone who felt that students were a 'drain on society'. It's stuck since then. Burnout (or 'carer fatigue') is a subject close to my heart. Of my colleagues who I started with as a foundation doctor, I don't know a single one who, at some point, hasn't felt drained and exhausted to the point of becoming unwell. The answer often feels like 'no'. And the result wasn't particularly unexpected.

I know its been a while since Ive posted here, but the last six weeks since Black Wednesday have made me aware of some sad facts. The Ramblings of a Paramedic Stretcher Monkey. One of my duties is the manning of an RRV or rapid response vehicle. I was one of the first RRVs some years ago and it was all a great learning curve. Having seen how it was done in the Westcountry Ambulance Service I wanted to use their model. No point in trying to reinvent the wheel. Thank you so much for criticising doctors (and particularly consultants) in the NHS for not working weekends, and in particular for saying that the absence of consultants leads to 6000 deaths in the UK each year.
