Blue Highways 2011

Friday, September 9, 2011. Days Twenty and Twenty One- Heading Home. We managed to fit in a few activities today and make headway, but we're having trouble with Picasa, so I can't upload any pictures. Hope to figure it out at some point and complete the blog! It tasted great, but literally glued your mouth together with each bite. Yum, right? We also tried to find coffee at an interesting little store/taxidermist that had out front the largest rocking chair in the world. We weren't allowed to climb o...

Blue Highways 2011: Day Seventeen

http://www.bluehighways2011.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-seventeen.html

Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Woke up in Winslow, Arizona, and what else could we do? Afterward, we had breakfast in Holbrook at Mr. Maestas diner, one of Rt. 66's kitchy places. It was fun to look around and the huervos rancheros and breakfast burrito were delicious. Our next (unplanned) stop was an antique shop on Bucket of Blood Street (really! We decided to skip the Petrified Forest National Park, as everyplace we stopped had some and we felt we'd seen enough to fill a forest anyway! Undeterred, we hea...

Blue Highways 2011: Day Thirteen

http://www.bluehighways2011.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-thirteen.html

Friday, September 2, 2011. Late post today. When we arrived at my brother's house in CA last night around 9:15, it seemed like bad form to start blogging before saying hello! 375 mpg (average- assisted by Pete putting the cruise control on 100 mph in Nevada. This I heard about later.is it any wonder I don't sleep much in the car? Countless memories and only a few little flareups! There wasn't much to see in Nevada, but we stopped to eat at The Pig (purely because of its name) where we had good BBQ. We di...

Blue Highways 2011: Day Sixteen

http://www.bluehighways2011.blogspot.com/2011/09/untitled.html

Monday, September 5, 2011. Today was Grand Canyon day. It was beautiful and grand, as expected. We hiked around a bit and took the requisite too many photos. Here are just a few. It's hard to fathom how such a small-appearing river carved out these crazy canyon walls. The most amazing thing about Wupatki is a naturally occurring "blow hole." From some subterranean cavity in the earth, air blows up, strong and cool enough to feel like air conditioning. We don't know why it works or why it sometime...The r...

Blue Highways 2011: Day Fourteen

http://www.bluehighways2011.blogspot.com/2011/09/day-fourteen.html

Friday, September 2, 2011. This trip just keeps getting better; we've decided we're not coming back. Oh, come on.who's surprised? Kidding, obviously.but what fun to stumble across all these unexpected delights! I'll admit, I haven't seen that many casinos (though I have been to Las Vegas) but this one is beautiful. David was in school today so he wasn't with us for lunch. We don't get to see our California contingent very often. (On another note, both kids have gotten into Lego stop-gap animation and...

Backroads, Bars and Blue Highways | Backroads

Backroads, Bars and Blue Highways. It is good to have an end to journey towards; but it is the journey that matters, in the end." - Ursula K. Le Guin. On old US maps, main roads were red, back roads were blue. Backroads, Bars and Blue Highways [bluehighways.us] is about the places I have been and the people I have met. It was created in an attempt to preserve the memories and photos gathered over many years before the memory fails and the photos fade. Detroit Made : John Hiatt. Dinero : Texas Tornados.
