Exploring the why of this fantastic planet! Who writes this, anyways? Who writes this, anyways? I finally made my geologist pilgrimage to the beautiful stratigraphy of the Grand Canyon! I graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2013 after creating my own major, Environmental Policy, to combine geology with the social science and economics that happen when you add human behavior into the natural environment. You can find me elsewhere on the internet at: www.linkedin.com/in/courtneyvanstolk.

Exploring the why of this fantastic planet! Who writes this, anyways? Planting seeds of change in Rio. August 6, 2016. August 6, 2016. There may be 1,001 things in the news that are going wrong with the Rio Olympics, but you know what? They unleashed some blunt climate change messages and amazing geographical graphics on the big screen. So at least something is going right. Also, where can I get one of those crazy bikes that are being pedaled in with the procession of athletes? Part 1: Monadnocks →.

I defeated the ASBOG FG! | Blue Marble Earth

https://bluemarbleearth.wordpress.com/2016/11/29/i-defeated-the-asbog-fg

Exploring the why of this fantastic planet! Who writes this, anyways? I defeated the ASBOG FG! November 29, 2016. All three times that I went to the Geological Society of America conferences, I picked up something from the Association of State Boards of Geology (ASBOG) booth. I won a rather nice tape measure from them in 2015. All three times, the booth staff admonished me with “you should take the Fundamentals of Geology exam before you forget everything you learned in university! When I was studying fo...

Oh, Canada! | Blue Marble Earth

https://bluemarbleearth.wordpress.com/2016/07/22/oh-canada

Exploring the why of this fantastic planet! Who writes this, anyways? July 22, 2016. July 26, 2016. Work and classwork kept me too busy to brush up on the regional geology before the trip, and the fascinating landscape made me regret it. This post series will document my research on the geological oddities I saw, broken up into more manageable chunks by each leg of the road trip. Coming soon: Montreal to Quebec City: The Great Meteor Hotspot Track and Monadnocks. Planting seeds of change in Rio →.

Exploring the why of this fantastic planet! Who writes this, anyways? August 16, 2016. September 8, 2016. Intro: Oh, Canada! As we drove past Mont Saint-Hilaire we saw another huge hill towering over the flat agricultural landscape far in the distance- Mont Rougemont. This image of Mont Saint-Hilaire courtesy of the PlentyofNothing blog, as mine didn’t turn out. It looks more bear-like from ground level, I promise. It’s a diverse family. Pangaea started to break apart 200 million years ago, and...Deposit...

Glacier Basics | Rock Paper Glacier!

An appreciation for glacial landscapes. Not from ’round here, are ya? Maine’s Ice Age Trail. Western Maine’s Ice Age Trail. What is a glacier? Snow is what helps the glacier grow. Like our food helps us grow. The more snow the glacier gets, the bigger it gets. Snow builds up and squeezes the snow into ice (like one of those way-too-hard snow balls but harder). Ice crystals can grow and move over time, making the glacier flow downhill like very slow honey. What is it like to be on a glacier? Up here, the ...

An appreciation for glacial landscapes. Not from ’round here, are ya? Maine’s Ice Age Trail. Western Maine’s Ice Age Trail. Can people look at plants and guess what rocks are underneath? White Pine on a ridge= well-drained soil= bedrock, sand or cobbles= if not bedrock, could be an esker! Maybe it’s possible, but first here is the background and logic:.
