Bluestem Nursery: March 2011
http://bluestemnursery.blogspot.com/2011_03_01_archive.html
Monday, March 28, 2011. For Screening or a Fence: Willow Fedge vs Coppiced Willows. That Jim (6'2"), the owner of Bluestem Nursery, standing amongst. Salix viminalis Superba. That is just one year's growth! On the willows, not Jim! Willows are great for screening. They put on a lot of growth in a single year, especially when coppiced. Cut to ground level) in late winter/early spring. There are two ways to grow them: upright. Which involves putting cuttings in the ground, and building a fedge. We are loca...

Monday, April 1, 2013. Solving a Lawn Problem in San Diego - March 2013 Update. Well, over a year has passed since I used your Enviro-Turf lawn here in San Diego. As you may recall, first 4 months Nov., Dec., Jan., and Feb 2012 were outstanding as far as water reduction in using your product. Following that time, I still paid close attention to the water usage in the summer months and then in the fall. We are so happy for you George! And many thanks for all these updates and the beautiful photos!
Bluestem Nursery: Solving a Lawn Problem in San Diego, California, Part 1
http://bluestemnursery.blogspot.com/2012/02/lawn-woes-in-san-diego-california.html
Thursday, February 16, 2012. Solving a Lawn Problem in San Diego, California, Part 1. Last year George B contacted us because he felt that our Enviro-Turf lawn seed might be the solution to his desire to have a less thirsty lawn in his hot dry climate in San Diego, California. He sent us this info regarding his motivation behind his change to our Enviro-Turf:. This was what the thirsty lawn looked like, despite regular watering:. Labels: Low maintenance lawn. Thursday, May 20, 2010. Willow Elephants in England. The Brits are miles ahead of us in North America, when it comes to the use of willows for sculpture (though Patrick Doherty. Are two notable exceptions). Here is my latest discovery, from a post that is no long available on The Guardian's website. There are 9 more photos on The Guardian's website. Including some of how the elephants were constructed. There are a few more interesting details on the BBC website. Thursday, May 6, 2010. Coming from England...

Thursday, April 28, 2011. Planting Our Bare Root Plants and Plugs. Many of our customers order the bare root Miscanthus plants, particularly Miscanthus Giganteus. Just in case you don't know how to plant it, I have a picture of one below. The green line indicates the soil level. There should be a point where the stalk changes from light to dark. That is the previous soil level. So try to plant it to approximately the same depth again. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Christina Lake, British Columbia, Canada.

Living Willow: Coracle Project Update
http://purpleosier.blogspot.com/2011/04/coracle-project-update.html
Tuesday, April 26, 2011. Here's an update on the Upper Michigan coracle-building project. We first reported on last fall. Poppy Hatinger says their first version, made by sticking the stakes directly into the ground and woven with French randing, dried just enough under the snow over the winter that some zip ties had to be tightened. It should dry more now that (we hope) warmer weather is on the way. The seat is enclosed in the weaving on this version. Posted by Donna Kallner. This is very cool!

Woodlands and Meadows: April 2014
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2014_04_01_archive.html
Sunday, April 6, 2014. I am sick and tired of winter. How can you say it is spring, when I still have a foot of snow in some places in the yard.. I know tomorrow is supposed to go to 10 C. Yes I am being very cynically, but gardening sales season is coming up way to fast, and what will I have to offer.. This is the latest I have ever removed the coverings from the over wintering plants. two nights ago we removed the brush but the plastic was still frozen down. Sedum, Red Carpet, survived quite nicely.

Woodlands and Meadows: May 2012
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2012_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 31, 2012. Everything has popped. What a difference two weeks make. Here it is the last days of May and this past week you would swear it was July or August. I have Daylilies blooming. Aztec Gold is early but not that early, it's not supposed to bloom till the end of June. The Hosta are up. Remember, I spaced them out last year? I think they will be good for a few. But a nice coat of compost and a little rain this past day and they are smiling. Now I have to get the Woolly Thyme path to smile.

Woodlands and Meadows: Squirrels
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2013/03/squirrels.html
Sunday, March 24, 2013. I don't mind the squirrels at the bird feeder except when they scratch up the window frames. We put a new window in last fall and I just happened to get a new bird feeder last fall also. The new window frame is made of Fiberglas. The squirrel just can't get a grip. So he scampers up the cedar clapboards and makes a lunge for the feeder. The squirrel found it and yes he can get to it. So it is grab and go. Back to the post and down.. Woodlands and Meadows: Weeding Through the Book Shelves
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2013/01/weeding-through-book-shelves.html
Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Weeding Through the Book Shelves. I was an avid reader as a child and had a good collections of the usual Anne of Green Gables, Trixie Blenton and Nancy Drew. As I got older, I collected books on crafting and sewing. I still have many of those. As I became interested in gardening, so to added to my collection of books. Cooking; dido. But my garden and cook books (I did weed through those) remained. As you see, I have an extensive collection of wildflower books. Then I started...

Woodlands and Meadows: November 2012
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Sunday, November 25, 2012. What pulls her back to work, what about the Nursery? I am working at the Christmas Tree Research Centre as a Research Assistant. I have been hired to run the Tissue Culture Lab (which I have had previous experience with) and to assist a researcher in Molecular Breeding (which I have no experience in. Will learn). Http:/ www.dal.ca/faculty/agriculture/research/centres-and-labs/christmas-tree-research-centre.html. This gives the industry a bad name. It doesn't matter that "yo...

Woodlands and Meadows: July 2012
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Tuesday, July 24, 2012. Two projects on the go. Neither is finished and one was started last fall. The daylily and grass bed was expanded on either side last fall.. The daylilies have become too crowded and the grasses have not been shown off to their best. Also in the mean time, I have a few more of each that need a good home.. I am sure it has its place, but not in my Thyme. As I started to excavate, I realized that there was a good inch or two of soil on the flag stone. I can only guess that ins...

Monday, March 26, 2012. Update on Sterilizing Soil. We purchased a new microwave. No I did not bust the other sterilizing soil. So this time I went 4 minutes. The temperature reached 198 F, just under the toxic level all the references say you want to stay away from. I wrapped my little bundle in a bathroom towel and took its temperature every 10 min. 10 min 188 F. 20 min 178 F. 30 min 170 F. Monday, March 19, 2012. Seed Starting Time, Again. Woodlands and Meadows: Extreme Composting
http://woodlandsandmeadows.blogspot.com/2015/03/extreme-composting.html
Saturday, March 7, 2015. Any one who knows me or has heard me give talks on gardening, knows I'm passionate about compost (wrote 2 blogs on the subject in 2011). What has got me on to this post is the mention of the build up of compost in bags on the back deck of homes, because no one can get to their compost bins or piles or the use of snowshoes to get to the compost pile on the NSAGC Facebook. Page This is the first year, I have ever had to resort to snowshoes to dump the compost. Promote Your Page Too.

Tuesday, May 19, 2009. Artist Kathlyn Miller's LIFE BOX, a perfect gift. One of our Bluestem customers came in yesterday to purchase a second LIFE BOX made by artist Kathlyn Miller. He had bought one just the day before as a gift but found that he couldn't part with it.the boxes really seem to make a connection. What fun Kathlyn must have when she picks out the shells and then selects the perfect semiprecious stones for the dangle on top. Each box is different.its hard to pick out a favorite. It's a tric...

Friday, April 1, 2016. The Beauty of Willows. Jim (the owner of Bluestem Nursery) has a brother who lives in Ohio. Frank not only also grows willows and ornamental grasses, but he loves to photograph them. On March 27 he took the following pictures of Salix rubens 'Hutchinsons Yellow'. With Salix chaenomeloides (Japanese pussy willow). Frank said, "The pictures really don't do justice to how beautiful this tableau has been.". I can't imagine them looking even more beautiful in person! A 50% reduction in ...
