Tamki, a village in South Vietnam, was heavily fortified with concrete bunkers. Tamki was protected by Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) soldiers and by American Army advisors. By the late sixties, approximately 5000 American helicopters were involved in the Vietnam conflict. This included Hueys, Chinooks, Sky Cranes, Cobras, and Kiowas. HELICOPTERS IN CHU LAI AIRFIELD. Heavy loads, such as artillery and even other light aircraft, could be transported by Chinooks and Sky Cranes. Chinooks also carried battalions to and from Vietnam combat zones. Hueys were utility helicopters made by Bell Helicopter, and were used as Gunships and Nighthawks in the Vietnam War.

ARTILLERY at FIREBASE SIBERIA - The Howitzer. The American M-101 105mm Howitzer was a light and maneuverable weapon employed in the Fire Support System throughout South Vietnam. Each Howitzer required a crew of eight. The main purpose of the fire bases was to provide support for the infantry in the field. However, after the North Vietnamese Army acquired Soviet built M-46 130mm Field Guns, with ranges more than double that of the American Howitzer, the FSB artillery was at a serious disadvantage.

Chinook Crash

American and ARVN investigators sift through rubble of a Chinook Helicopter, a CH47, that crashed in the Vietnam jungle near Firebase Maryanne on July 21, 1971. Whenever a helicopter went down in South Vietnam, an investigative team was sent to examine the site and to recover parts such as engines and transmissions.
