Words Times Words: July 2011

Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Wednesday, July 27, 2011. A Decade of Leah. Leah at Huntington Beach in June. Leah with a Danish Santa in Copenhagen. My last child has reached the double-digits. This feels like a milestone to me and represents a new phase in my life and hers. But I was terrified of how we'd get along with four kids in a foreign country, one who was a newborn. Leah was a beautiful baby and turned out to be much easier than a three year old or a seven year old or even a 10 y...

Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Tuesday, September 6, 2011. Mama Goes Back to School Part 3. Here is my report of my first day in high school. Here are the words that represent my experience: acne, BO, zits, yelling across the room, flirting, hiding, reading, texting, blushing, laughing, kicking (desks) and tapping (pencils). Apparently the tapper thought he was in band class. Many times I heard, "What are we supposed to do? Here are words that I said during both classes of 39 students: st...

Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Monday, February 20, 2012. Things we "GET" to do. Leah came to me the other day and said, "Look at this." She showed me a blank answer on a piece of homework. Perpetually positive Mr. Olson. She said, "I asked Mr. Olson if I had to do this problem. I didn't think I should have to do it.". Well, what did he say? He said I GET to do this problem, so I HAVE to do it," she sighed. No, you GET to! I don't know if I will be able to apply this principle to cleaning...

Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Tuesday, February 22, 2011. What I've Been Doing. I haven't vanished into winter oblivion. I've been posting at the Daily Herald's Utah Mom Click. I've found a great illustrator for my posts. My friend Mary Lee, who used to live down the street, is the artist/cartoonist/illustrator. She just happens to be the most creative person I know. I consider myself to be very lucky indeed. Here are some of my recent posts. The Dangerous Descent into Driving. Nathan Le...

Words Times Words: Two days without a microwave
http://wordstimeswords.blogspot.com/2012/04/two-days-without-microwave.html
Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Thursday, April 5, 2012. Two days without a microwave. A few days ago, in the middle of defrosting some turkey, our microwave gave up the ghost. It didn't screech, or whine or peter out slowly or make any other distress sounds. It just stopped. It had died. It was only four years old. Such a young microwave. Was it defective or is that just how long microwaves last "these days? How am I supposed to put a corn dog in a pan on the stove? But who cares really?

Words Times Words: Nathan's Summer
http://wordstimeswords.blogspot.com/2012/06/nathans-summer.html
Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Monday, June 25, 2012. Nathan has about an hour of chores a day which isn't nearly enough, frankly. Let's weigh the work vs. fun. One hour vs. eight hours of play. Hmmm. Slacker Mom big time. I love this post! Do you think boys this age have more fun than girls because they dont have all that self-consciouness of girls and girls tendency get cliquey (a word? Anyway, what a lovely summer for Nate! Words Times Words: January 2011
http://wordstimeswords.blogspot.com/2011_01_01_archive.html
Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Tuesday, January 18, 2011. It's January 18 and I feel like I've been assaulted a bit as a parent, and that America's education system has been similarly raked over the coals, perhaps justifiably. Last week I went to hear Condoleeza Rice. How do we become more competitive? She offers several ways, but it seems like my kids will be middle-aged by the time her suggestions can take hold. And then America will be a tortoise, left in the dust by the smarter, f...

Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Sunday, April 22, 2012. Sweet Sam and Finals. Sammie in the hosptial. Just when I have some time to smell the roses my tulips are dying- already. And my lilacs are in full bloom, several weeks early. They usually don't come out until Mother's Day. Time is marching on. Sammie graduates the end of May and school is almost out for everyone else. Thursday, April 5, 2012. Two days without a microwave. How am I supposed to put a corn dog in a pan on the stove?

Reading and Writing as Many Words as Possible! Monday, January 23, 2012. I'm such a snot. But before we got a little snow, I was seriously thinking that I was going to have to join the ranks of gym-going people, eat my own words, and hate every minute of it. Guilt to exercise nags whether you're going to the gym or the mountains. So I might as well just exercise. Monday, January 16, 2012. I particularly like this song from the Calvary Baptist Church. My family and I saw a great exhibit, This Light of Ours.
