A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ
One Disciple's Journey: June 2015
http://bobbrookejr.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html
A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. June 7, 2015. It's Hard to Accept Jesus. How hard it is for people to accept Jesus. Even Jesus' own family didn't accept Him, seeing Him as a deranged son and brother who had gone off the deep end. They had reason not to believe that Jesus was the Son of God. After all, they hadn't yet known the full glory of God in Jesus. They knew Him only in part. Some doubt He heals anyone. They think of healing as outside the bounds of what's possible. They think somet...They ...
One Disciple's Journey: The Way Christians Get Ready for Christmas
http://bobbrookejr.blogspot.com/2015/11/the-christian-way-to-get-ready-for.html
A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. November 21, 2015. The Way Christians Get Ready for Christmas. It's never popular to talk about death, especially at this time of year. None of us wants to die. But there is nothing we can do about it. I'm going to die, you're going to die, and so is every other human being who is alive today. Human life is fragile and brief in the grand scheme of things. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). These Dangerous Christmas Days. The Way Christians Get Ready for Christmas.
One Disciple's Journey: The Enormity of Our Salvation Through Faith in Jesus Christ
http://bobbrookejr.blogspot.com/2016/10/the-enormity-of-our-salvation-through.html
A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. October 9, 2016. The Enormity of Our Salvation Through Faith in Jesus Christ. We don't naturally have a relationship with God. All we have is a disease, called sin, which separates us from God. The only way we can approach God is with a cry for mercy: Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, Have Mercy on Me, a Sinner. Many choose the not at all option. Many of us take our sin disease for granted. We think: Everyone has it, so it must not be that bad! And from the cross, upo...

A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. February 10, 2016. An Ash Wednesday Meditation on Death. Now, this bell tolling softly for another says to me: "Thou must die." Perchance he for whom the bell tolls be so ill, as that he knows not it tolls for him. And perchance I may think myself so much better than I am, as that those who are about me and see my state may have caused it to toll for me, and I know not that. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). One Disciple's Journey: God's Work Continues at Wounded Knee
http://bobbrookejr.blogspot.com/2016/07/gods-work-continues-at-wounded-knee.html
A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. July 22, 2016. God's Work Continues at Wounded Knee. I went on to other fields of ministry, but my heart was touched in such a way that I'll never forget the people and the place of Wounded Knee. God's work does continue there! And for His grace and mercy shown us all, who have been called (and will be called) to work for Him there, I give all the glory to our heavenly Father. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). Surviving life with grace and hope. Are You Good Enough? Previous post: The Devastation of Depression. Next post: Mating Rattlesnakes? July 23, 2015. We suited up and filed into the gym. Our ruddy-faced PE teacher hauled in a large bag of balls and shouted, Basketball this week, fellas! He never got my name right.) Don’t you know you are supposed to. My face crimsoned to uproarious, hooting laughter. A Childhood Experience Grows into Dysfunction. I felt that I was not good enough. Ask a trusted friend ab...

Surviving life with grace and hope. Previous post: Are You Good Enough? Next post: Comfortable clothes. Comfortable people. July 28, 2015. It was early morning. Brewing coffee smelled like breakfast. The dogs were fed and settled into their morning rag doll poses. I stumbled outside with bleary eyes to fill the bird feeder, retrieved it from the hook under the big mesquite tree, and stopped to look at the sky. Another beautiful day. But that’s Arizona. I blurted. A big one! I guess I interrupted a little...

Surviving life with grace and hope. Incredibly insightful and hilarious observations about recovery from major surgery. In the hospital: Make sure and have someone take a picture of you immediately after surgery while you’re still pain-free from that marvelous anesthesia and you haven’t seen the hospital food yet. You won’t look that good again for weeks. (RANT: By the way, why don’t they give you that anesthesia for pain when you’re…. Read more Mating Rattlesnakes? The Truth about Getting Old. On The Tr...

Surviving life with grace and hope. Learning to Live without All the Answers. Previous post: Comfortable clothes. Comfortable people. Next post: That was then. This is now. August 11, 2015. Learning to Live without All the Answers. As unfamiliar people looked around, no one imagining that the timid twenty-something in the corner was a clergyman. You know, I don’t even remember what happened. Later the emotionally spent widow with streaking mascara reached for my hand and said, Why, Pastor, why? Christian...

Surviving life with grace and hope. The Devastation of Depression. Next post: Are You Good Enough? July 14, 2015. Already an introvert, I only wanted to be alone. I avoided conflict and was (am still) unable to watch any movie or play with stressful relationships. People exhaust me and many days I could be happy staring at the horizon with only the dog for company. I can no longer serve on committees or take leadership. Should never be angry. Up came the beach balls and I was totally incapacitated. Perso...

Surviving life with grace and hope. Developing, discussing, and wondering about faith in God. I am thinking today about Percy Bysshe Shelley’s sonnet, “Ozymandias.” “I met a traveller from an antique land, Who said ’Two vast and trunkless legs of stone Stand in the desert. . . . Near them, on the sand, Half sunk a shattered visage lies, whose frown, And wrinkled lip, and sneer of cold command, Tell…. Read more Election Day Thoughts. The Truth about Getting Old. Surviving life with grace and hope. The Truth about Getting Old. You’re not old, grandma, not really old! One woman’s five-year-old granddaughter comforted her about turning 65 and, holding her face in her hands, assured her that she really was still a valuable person. Getting old is a problem if even little children don’t want you to become an old person. Why? Where does a little…. Read more The Truth about Getting Old. A Writer's Life
Saturday, March 3, 2018. Beware of the Elephant in the Room. Today, you often hear the phrase “the elephant in the room.” No, it has nothing to do with elephants. But it usually means there’s a subject present that no one wants to talk about. For writers, that subject is whether you’re a writer or an author. What is it about our society that reveres authors more than writers. Aren’t writers and authors the same? Don’t they both communicate with words? Perhaps the idea goes back to when they were in school.

One Disciple's Journey
A Life of Saving Faith in Jesus Christ. October 29, 2016. No Church Has to Die. Once there was a worshiping community who was radically devoted to God. They were committed to spreading the Gospel. They were connected in such a way that they called each other brothers and sisters. They even sold their property and possessions so no one in the community would have to live without basic needs. And walls came down! Why don't we have churches like that today? Has God lost His power? Leadership matters in all ...
