Bob Wightman

Sunday, 18 March 2018. With the media predicting another national crisis - the mini beast from the east - for the weekend road riding was out of the equation. More fat bike action! Cath had agreed to go on an all women's ride but there were a couple of blokes invited along so we headed up the Dale to Threshfield. It was all a bit nippy getting ready, even in the lee of some trees, but soon we were away. Pete and Jo on the climb up from Threshfield. Heading off Threshfield Moor. And then the sun came out!

Bob Wightman: March 2015

http://bobwightman.blogspot.com/2015_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, 28 March 2015. Long days in the Saddle. We've used the Settle to Carlisle railway before to get to a distant starting point and then ride home. One time we rode back from Kirkby Stephen via Buttertubs and Fleet Moss, another we rode back from Garsdale Head on the Pennine Bridleway. Those next kilometres were hard work! And I was quite glad to turn uphill(! And start to get some help.At the summit the route didn't head towards Malham but away from it, down Stockdale Lane. In dry conditio...Back ...

Bob Wightman: Data, Data everywhere nor any time to Think

http://bobwightman.blogspot.com/2015/02/data-data-everywhere-nor-any-time-to.html

Wednesday, 4 February 2015. Data, Data everywhere nor any time to Think. With apologies to Tenysson). But other than bragging rights (colloquially known as "willy waving") what's all this data used for? The TR training plans also include regular fitness tests as each workout is adjusted to your current fitness level - an estimate of how much power you can sustain for an hour known as Functional Threshold Power (FTP). Rather a lot of time spent in Zone 4. This is somewhat unusual for me: my muscles are no...

Bob Wightman: More Long Days

http://bobwightman.blogspot.com/2015/04/more-long-days.html

Sunday, 26 April 2015. I'd wanted to do a long MTB ride for some time, I'd done a 100Km ride last September but nothing particularly long since then. With Cath over in the Lakes last Saturday for a girls' ride I'd got the day free to myself. The driver for this is that I've entered the Yorkshire Dales 300 ITT. Despite a slight headwind I got to Kettlewell in good time so a visit to Zarina's. Another cafe stop in Askrigg and time to leave the outward route and head back. There's just the little matter...

Bob Wightman: Close to the Edge

http://bobwightman.blogspot.com/2015/01/close-to-edge.html

Thursday, 15 January 2015. Close to the Edge. There are times when you step a little too close to the edge for comfort, the wrong decision leading to trouble rather than adventure, maybe even a statistic rather than a learning experience. Sunday's ride was pretty close to that. Simon set off like a rocket (well compared to me) and was soon a yellow blur in the distance. So what if we'd carried on? Experiences meted out, lessons learned. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). View my complete profile. Wanted...

Bob Wightman: A Dales Loop

http://bobwightman.blogspot.com/2015/02/a-dales-loop.html

Friday, 20 February 2015. On Saturday Cath was leading the Skipton CC club ride so I had the day to myself to fill. Having kept myself indoors on the turbo-trainer for virtually all of January to avoid icy roads I was keen to get a longer ride in. Half an hour and I'm replenished but I've one of the big climbs of the day to come: Mastiles Lane. Since I was pacing myself for the whole ride rather than rushing at individual sections it didn't turn out too bad - I nearly had to put a foot down right at ...

In the Bleak Midwinter II - Unfinished Business: Postsrcipt: Rosie

http://markswinterbgrtwo.blogspot.com/2011/02/postsrcipt-rosie.html

In the Bleak Midwinter II - Unfinished Business. In June 2007 I completed the Bob Graham Round in under 24 hours. In December 2009, blizzards and extreme cold were endured for a midwinter round that took 24 hours and 22 minutes. This coming winter, I'm getting those 22 minutes back, and then some. Sunday, 13 February 2011. Rosie Lydia Smith - aged 6 days. 65279; Funnily enough, not making it already seems a much less bitter pill to swallow. She's fantastic. I'll be back winter BGR, perhaps when I turn 40.

Paddy and me: 8 March - Postponed, possibly...

http://alonewithpaddy.blogspot.com/2012/03/8-march-postponed-possibly.html

Five years after the BG, and two years after a midwinter BG, I'm at it again. This blog charts progress towards a Paddy Buckley Round in summer 2012. The Paddy Buckley Round is a continuous circuit for fell runners (well for anyone really) of 61 miles, climbing 28,000 feet and visiting 47 summits in stunning Snowdonia, hopefully within 24 hours. Thursday, 8 March 2012. 8 March - Postponed, possibly. It's the only choice really. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). 8 March - Postponed, possibly. The Borrow...

Going Downhill Quickly: October 2012

http://goingdownhillquickly.blogspot.com/2012_10_01_archive.html

The blog of two mates who in an effort to get fit took up fell running. Monday, 15 October 2012. The RAB Mountain Marathon 2012 – The Cheviots. The location for the RAB was finally announced in early September as the Cheviots in Northumberland. I’d never been up that way and Albert said he had never really run round there either but we were assured by others that it would make for some good running (not that I do much running in a Mountain Marathon). It was awful so I resorted to my trusty Super Noodles.

Going Downhill Quickly: Another Catch Up

http://goingdownhillquickly.blogspot.com/2014/05/another-catch-up.html

The blog of two mates who in an effort to get fit took up fell running. Tuesday, 13 May 2014. No updates again for a while, not enough hours in the day most of the time! I did enjoy the team scoring element though where even if you finished many places down you were still contributing to the overall results. One of the few places I ran during Autumn despite the dodgy knee/hip - this was coming off Fairfield into Grasmere in between the rain showers. Final descent at Box Hill, great fast grassy running.

Going Downhill Quickly: Ben Nevis Race 2013

http://goingdownhillquickly.blogspot.com/2013/09/ben-nevis-race-2013.html

The blog of two mates who in an effort to get fit took up fell running. Wednesday, 11 September 2013. Ben Nevis Race 2013. No update for a while. I've had quite an 'up and down' summer where running is concerned (pardon the pun). I managed to get a last minute entry to Wasdale where I ended up with my first ever DNF; it was far too warm for me and I got timed out at Pillar. Heading to Sty Head I saw Pauline who took this photo. Topping up at the burn. Then it was just a case of being careful where my lef...

Going Downhill Quickly: June 2011

http://goingdownhillquickly.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

The blog of two mates who in an effort to get fit took up fell running. Wednesday, 22 June 2011. Great Lakes Run 2011 - 13 miles 7000ft. Runners heading up the band that leads onto Bowfell. Strangely enough they did actually feel less slippy, never heard that one before. Heading down off Slight Side we saw a small group heading back up from the west(! Thanks as usual must go to all involved with putting this event on, it really typifies what fell running is all about. Links to this post. I did a couple m...

Going Downhill Quickly: February 2012

http://goingdownhillquickly.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html

The blog of two mates who in an effort to get fit took up fell running. Saturday, 18 February 2012. Mark's recent updates reminded me that I hadn't updated this blog myself for quite a while, so here's a few pictures taken in the period since we did Three Shires last September. We were back in Cumbria for a friend's wedding at the end of September and it just so happened to be on the same day as the Scafell Pike Race. Many thanks to Andy Holden. For taking this shot. The runners heading up the hill.

Going Downhill Quickly: June 2013

http://goingdownhillquickly.blogspot.com/2013_06_01_archive.html

The blog of two mates who in an effort to get fit took up fell running. Sunday, 16 June 2013. Ennerdale Fell Race 2013. Saturday 8 June brought another Ennerdale Horseshoe and a good turnout of runners in the sunshine. I didn't have much of a plan apart from getting round and hoping to at least match my average time of about 6 hours. I got to Pillar about 20 mins before the checkpoint closed and had a drink and a sit down, taking the opportunity to clear the scree from my shoes and socks. From there ...

Bob Wigington's Blog | My ride across Canada

Bob Wigington's Blog. My ride across Canada. DAY 39 – Newmarket-Toronto – 49 kms. July 19, 2010. My thoughts were mixed as I left on a spectacular morning. Would I miss the routines that were now my life, not having even looked at a newspaper, one of my daily passions at home, for six weeks and not really caring what had gone on in the outside world? Would I miss the joy of being on the bike, the fresh air, the intimate and unavoidable contact with whatever the weather may throw at me? July 18, 2010.
