Just another WordPress.com site. August 5, 2013. I was surprised to discovered, some time back, that so much of FRP gaming is sold on PDFs now. This is, for many people, how they buy the new gaming stuff coming out – and increasingly the older stuff that’s reissued in this format. July 30, 2013. What is Good D&D Art? July 17, 2013. 1) Has anyone else been reading Wayne Rossi’s excellent blog on all things OD&D? It’s over here. June 10, 2013. Did you play D&D before there was D&D? May 22, 2013. May 7, 2013.

Into the Dark: May 2015
http://into-the-dark-rpg.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html
Thursday, May 28, 2015. Neuroscience and Gaming: Your Life Is a Hex Crawl. Neuroscientist Steven Novella blogs about a recent study on the brain cells involved in navigation through space. Previous research discovered the existence of place cells, which the brain uses to track locations; the new study discovered grid cells, which the brain uses to direct motion through an environment. Evidently, the brain uses a hex map. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). I blog on higher ed and miscellaneous stuff here. Lament...

Into the Dark: August 2015
http://into-the-dark-rpg.blogspot.com/2015_08_01_archive.html
Friday, August 7, 2015. Zak Smith's VICE Article on D&D. Zak Smith, artist, adult film actor, award-winning DIY game designer, and fellow resident of Los Angeles County (Hollywood division), has written a thoughtful article on the persisting appeal and vitality of Dungeons and Dragons in an age of video games and Hollywood blockbusters. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it feels as if some kind of giant open pop-cultural loop (or loops) have finally been closed with the publication of this article.

Into the Dark: Fighters in the Twilight Empire
http://into-the-dark-rpg.blogspot.com/2015/07/fighters.html
Wednesday, July 22, 2015. Fighters in the Twilight Empire. The fighter abilities are inspired by the "warrior skills" in Empire of the Petal Throne. And not the Greyhawk. Supplement, since all attacks inflict 1d6 damage regardless of weapon type. The barbarian and cavalier training packages are inspired by the fighter sub-classes of the same names from the 1st edition AD&D Unearthed. Where it is a special ability of elvish troops. Speaking of not-so subtle OD&D references, scouts also have "outdoor s...

Just another WordPress.com site. September 10, 2013. Day 2: Favorite Playable Race. Strange as it might seem to folks, I never wanted to play anything but a human. In my current games, I think I’d have a hard time letting anyone play as anything but human. I haven’t quite got to the point where I have figured out the ecology of too many of the demi-human types in the campaign yet. When people play demi-humans, do they play them in a cliched way? Just another WordPress.com site. September 17, 2013. Day 3 – Favorite Playable Class. My mom used to read to me at night before I went to bed. We went through many, many books together this way – until I became old enough to want to read on my own. But, before that critical moment arrived, we had been to Oz (all of the Baum books, plus many of his “Non Oz” masterpieces), Narnia, Prydain, Middle Earth ( The Hobbit. And the entire Lord of the Rings. Green Knowe, and many other imaginary realms. You are com...

Just another WordPress.com site. January 27, 2014. The art that people use to inspire them in D&D is always important. We get our ideas about what our campaigns look like and feel like from many sources. I encourage DMs to go further afield. Put aside the kind of art you’re used to and look for ideas in mysterious byways that may have been, even unfairly, ignored. The OSR isn’t just about reheating the past. It’s about finding new places to take the old rules. This nameless monster is seen in flight over...

Just another WordPress.com site. May 7, 2014. Dungeons of the Amazon Queen…. Are there Amazons in my OD&D campaign? Yes Yes there are. While rolling up data on each of the “castles” and “towns” on the original Outdoor Survival. High level characters bold enough, and skilled enough, to be traveling these sunken and sepulchral highways may find themselves unexpectedly emerging in the Amazons’ castle. Laquo; Previous post.
