January 2015 – Calgary Bonsai

https://bonsaicalgary.wordpress.com/2015/01

Just trying to keep stuff alive! Red Pine from Seed. Indoor Grow Light Shelf – Completed! January 5, 2015. Well I finally finished it, not that it took that long, it just needed to get it done. Thankfully I was given some Christmas cash that definitely helped to give the project a much needed funding boost! I was having no luck trying to find the things I wanted on kijiji for cheap! So here it is, kind of empty right now, but should start filling up in the next few months! I also started my seed stratifi...

August 2014 – Calgary Bonsai

https://bonsaicalgary.wordpress.com/2014/08

Just trying to keep stuff alive! Red Pine from Seed. Bonsai Seeds for This Winter. August 31, 2014. As you know this past winter I grew some red pines from seed I had collected from a tree in my neighbourhood. I had some good success (7 trees survived the 25 seeds I had tried to germinate). I say that’s success because I think a lot of the ones I tried to germinate were not viable – I just didn’t know what I was looking for at the time! Apple seeds on the left, crabapple on the right. So I am not going t...

Nanking Cherry Bonsai Update – Calgary Bonsai

https://bonsaicalgary.wordpress.com/2014/08/08/nanking-cherry-bonsai-update

Just trying to keep stuff alive! Red Pine from Seed. Nanking Cherry Bonsai Update. August 8, 2014. They still shipped the nankings so as I mentioned I potted them all up and figured I would give them a shot anyways. I ended up with 3 of the 10 budding out and growing well. I can see why they would consider this below standard. I am still happy that I basically got 3 free nankings though! And finally the one above is the one that I wired pretty significantly. I did do some bud pinching and it threw ou...

Red Pine from Seed – Calgary Bonsai

https://bonsaicalgary.wordpress.com/red-pine-from-seed

Just trying to keep stuff alive! Red Pine from Seed. Red Pine from Seed. I am giving this project its own page for now because it’s been quite a process and I would like to document it all in one page! When I moved to Calgary I first started looking at all the native trees growing in my neighbourhood so I could get a better idea of what would grow best here. Lots of spruce, aspen, birch, juniper, burning bush etc. As well as red pines! In any case, I put the cones I had collected in a bowl in a sunny win...

My Trees – Calgary Bonsai

https://bonsaicalgary.wordpress.com/my-trees

Just trying to keep stuff alive! Red Pine from Seed. Just the ones worth keeping tabs on (in my opinion! I have deleted a few of the trees that I had originally listed on here – the cotoneaster, the quince, the pines, because they died! But I will hopefully have some more promising trees to put up here soon. Apparently the transition from Vancouver to Calgary was a bit much for many of my original favourites! This is my Dawn redwood, by far my favourite! 2 thoughts on “ My Trees. July 9, 2014 at 8:41 pm.

On an American forum I wanted to enter the Box store challenge what basically means you have to make a bonsai like tree from cheap under $30 garden center or box store material. Really love challenges like that, because they proof that our hobby doesn’t have to be expensive to enjoy. They are small but i’m happy with the result. By bending ...

Bonsai Care

BONSAI CARE - Cape Town. Bonsai Maintenance and Consulting. Artist: Heiné de Waal. What is a Bonsai? The Japanese word " Bonsai. Means tree in a pot. But a proper bonsai is more than just a tree in a pot. A true bonsai is 80% art and 20% horticulture. It is easy to keep a bonsai healthy and alive, but it is more complicated to keep it looking beautiful and proper - which increases its value! Therefore it is important to make use of a specialist who is well versed and experienced in this form of art.
