Bonza in North Korea. An account of my September 2010 trip to the most reclusive country in the world. Day 9 - a) Tomb of King Kongmin. Sunday September 12, 2010. Just outside Kaesong is the tomb of King Kongmin and his Mongolian wife Queen Noguk. Built in the mid-14th century. It is probably the royal burial site best maintained in its original state in North Korea, having avoided modern "renovations" by the Communist regime. Thursday, November 04, 2010. Unattended Baggage: February 2012
http://bonza-is-free.blogspot.com/2012_02_01_archive.html
I've quit the office job and wandering the world in 2012 with just the clothes in my bag. What will become of me? Intersection of China, Russia, and North Korea. Saturday February 11, 2012. In an earlier blog post I ranted on about how cosmopolitan Harbin was. But I now regret that description. Then this week I discovered Hunchun. Hunchun: Trilingual signs illuminate an avenue of karaoke joints. All the shop signs are trilingual - Cyrillic, Korean, Chinese. The hotel that I'm staying at seems to be espec...

I've quit the office job and wandering the world in 2012 with just the clothes in my bag. What will become of me? Two Things I Didn't Know About Gallipoli. Tuesday April 17, 2012. ANZAC Cove, Turkey. In recent years there's been an explosion of Australian and Kiwi visitors to the Gallipoli Peninsula in Turkey. As such I won't go over the usual ground of how solemn and sad the place is. But there were two major points I learnt on my excursion there:. 1 TRENCHES ARE STILL THERE. 2 IMPACT ON TURKEY. As a ki...

I've quit the office job and wandering the world in 2012 with just the clothes in my bag. What will become of me? The Greatest Year of My Life. One year ago I looked out the window of my comfortable office in Sydney and thought, “This isn’t quite right”. I now type this looking out the window in my hotel room in Yangon, Burma – and reflect on 2012, the most incredible year of my life. I started in -30C weather. In China for the ice festival in Harbin. In front of South Koreans. And went husky sledding.

I've quit the office job and wandering the world in 2012 with just the clothes in my bag. What will become of me? Are you here for World Domination? When I was making plans for a second visit to Portland, Oregon I noticed a curious phenomenon. Every cheap hostel and hotel bed seemed to be booked out. One of the hostel staff told me that there's a big conference on the weekend I was in town. Yikes. But I don't have a cat in my lap to stroke. And I'm not evil enough! Portland, Oregon: Hawaiian food cart.

I've quit the office job and wandering the world in 2012 with just the clothes in my bag. What will become of me? I ❤ Portland. Thursday July 5, 2012. Upon hearing my accent at a tram stop a local lady asked "Do you work for Nike? Even after visiting so many wonderful places around the world, for years I had always maintained that the only place I’d like to live. In outside of Australia is New York City. But now please allow me to add to that exclusive list – Portland, Oregon. Is it locally produced?

Unattended Baggage: The Simpsons in Portland
http://bonza-is-free.blogspot.com/2012/07/simpsons-in-portland.html
I've quit the office job and wandering the world in 2012 with just the clothes in my bag. What will become of me? The Simpsons in Portland. Friday July 6, 2012. When I arrived in Portland for my second visit I saw a street sign that said "Flanders St". As a long time fan of The Simpsons I chuckled to myself, as it reminded me of the do-gooder neighbour. A few minutes later I encountered a sign indicating "Lovejoy St". Hmmm, could this be a coincidence? I hurried to the hostel to do some research. The NE ...

Bonza in Iran
Day 1 - a) never give the thumbs up. Saturday October 22, 2011. A meeting was held at lunchtime to launch the group tour. The previous night our leader Reza had just completed the same two week tour with another group and was about to repeat it all again with us. From the introductions it was clear all of us had faced the same questions from family and friends "Iran? Why are you going there? Are you a terrorist? Well, except for me - I faced that reaction before the North Korea trip last year. Where you ...
