Book Cannibal

Saturday, August 18, 2012. The Last Book You Steal. There's a funny, sad piece of irony I've been seeing lately, which is college grads complaining about how hard it is to find a job in publishing, and then illegally downloading books. Hmm you think the two might be related? Maybe you think that ripping off a Stephen King or a George R.R. Martin novel is no big deal. Because hey, those guys are rolling in it, right? Do you know what publishers do with the money from their big blockbuster books? Search en...

Book Cannibal: September 2008

http://bookcannibal.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Saturday, September 27, 2008. City of Thieves by David Benioff. David Benioff is probably best known for writing The 25th Hour. A gritty crime novel which he then adapted into a Spike Lee film starring Edward Norton. He also wrote the screenplay for Troy (which I won't hold against him), and adapted Khalid Hosseini's The Kite Runner. But what I really want to talk about is Benioff's latest novel, City of Thieves. I've read some Philip Roth, but not American Pastoral. This list could go on and on. And...

Book Cannibal: June 2010

http://bookcannibal.blogspot.com/2010_06_01_archive.html

Friday, June 04, 2010. Little, Big by John Crowley. The universe was telling to me read this book. It's been recommended to me so many times over the last few years by so many people whose opinions I respect that I just couldn't go another day without reading it, so I ran out and bought it. Because of this quality, I'm reading this book very slowly. So slowly that I've finished eight other books since I've started it (Robert McCammon's Mr. Slaughter. John Hart's The Last Child. Ron Rash's One Foot in Eden.

Book Cannibal: April 2009

Monday, April 20, 2009. I must take a moment to talk about Queries.  Because the internet is big and wide and endless and there is conflicting information about whether or not I respond to e-queries that I'm not interested in.  I wish I could blame this inconsistency on someone else, but it's my fault.  In a blog post from a year ago I wrote:. And I have this stupid urge to write back and say something like ". Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Cameron McClure is a literary agent with the Donald Maass Literary ...

Book Cannibal: How to Break The Rules

http://bookcannibal.blogspot.com/2010/02/how-to-break-rules.html

Friday, February 12, 2010. How to Break The Rules. This post is on behalf of the San Francisco Writers Conference, where I'm giving a talk about The Rules of Writing, and how to break them. The conference suggested this post as an alternative to showing up with 100 photocopied handouts, which would have meant not having enough space for all those little 3oz bottles and an extra pair of shoes (thank you internet! 1) Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that they will not feel the time was wasted.

fangs, felines, fins, & fun fiction: February 2014

http://melaniatolan.blogspot.com/2014_02_01_archive.html

Fangs, felines, fins, and fun fiction. Sunday, February 16, 2014. Whoa, It's February already? I feel like the last month and a half have all happened in a week or less. This morning I woke up and realized I haven't blogged here in a while. Running two blogs can be a bit confusing to my mommy brain because I've written several posts here. And was patting myself for being such a good little blogger with all the craziness going on around me. Here's a sample of said craziness:. That pretty much sums up the ...

Pack a few snacks, a good book or two and come along for the ride. Because if nothing else, it's a wild ride, and there had better be some joy in the journey! Friday, May 28, 2010. Hey, I've got an idea. After all, from the time I was 5 years old, my mother described me as the responsible one. My brother, 13 months older, was the cute one. My mother swears that I was also cute, but my brother was definitely not responsible. Anyway, that's fodder for the therapist, not the blog. I've been working on my se...
