Reviews of books of many stripes. Monday, February 25, 2013. The Worst Hard Time, by Timothy Egan. It is clear from our present perspective that the horrors of the "dust bowl" were man-made. It took a few years and some gutsy thinking people to get that message out during the worst of it and to start the process that would lead to some recovery. Not that these plains have ever fully recovered. The story is devastating and often heart-breaking. And so very readable. Links to this post. The Worst Hard Time.

Reviews of books of many stripes. Saturday, April 27, 2013. The Red Door, by Charles Todd. A different kind of mystery, at least to me. Shortly after the end of WWI, Inspector Ian Rutledge is assigned two investigations: into a man who has been attacking people at night, and into the disappearance of a prominent citizen. He sets his own pace, however, not always showing up where he is expected to be. After all, Peter already has a wife. IS this a relative or is it bigamy or what? Links to this post.

Her husband Walter figures prominently as well, as do several other characters. But Patty is the only one who gets to write portions of her own "autobiography", oddly in the third person. I suppose it is the curse of anyone who is musical to be unable to ignore music. I am plagued by the piped in music in stores and I choke when I hear the top 40 selections on a passing radio. As opposed to a show like House, where when there is music at the end it is at least good music, and it usually doesn't last long. Instead, it accompanies relevant meaningful action.

I left there with my wallet significantly the worse for the venture but I had my cool Sephora bag and cool little birthday gift. I did not regret it. What a wonderful and colourful world. December 16, 2014. As it is feeling more and more like winter in London, we find ourselves going to either seasonal books (a selection of which I am working on) or really colourful ones. So to brighten up your Monday I’ve decided to review a colourful trio of books to be read with your loved ones. Is a perfect book for babies and toddlers, but it also works with early readers who are keen to try reading bits of text since the font is clear and very kid-friendly.
