Bookshelf Butterfly: India Black and the Gentleman Thief by Carol K. Carr
http://www.bookshelf-butterfly.blogspot.com/2015/07/india-black-and-gentleman-thief-by.html
Wednesday, 29 July 2015. India Black and the Gentleman Thief by Carol K. Carr. I am on a mission to persuade more people to read Carol K. Carr’s India Black. I genuinely feel that this is such an underrated series. These books are seriously good and even if you miss some of the books, each novel stands alone so there really is no excuse! But that soon becomes the least of India’s worries when she learns that one of the main suspects is a former flame. With her past fast catching up with her and...India B...

Tuesday, 20 December 2016. 8220;There is probably a smell of roasted chesnuts and other good comfortable things all the time, for we are telling Winter Stories – Ghost Stories, or more shame for us – round the Christmas fire.”. Charles Dickens, Telling Winter Stories, 1859. Every year at about this time, I tend to turn my reading to ghost stories. Okay, who am I kidding? After the success of A Christmas Carol. Dickens took to publishing festive ghost stories annually in the periodical All the Year Round.

Thursday, 18 June 2015. Finally Facing My Waterloo. It's quite a momentous day in history today (18 June 2015), as today marks the bicentenary of the Battle of Waterloo. One of the most pivotal battles in European history. Events and re-enactments are set to continue until the 21st. And now, finally, I've completed the set, much belatedly. If you're one of the stalwarts who bought and enjoyed the game, and perhaps still does, then I present to you the Austria army list. Austria Army List Link. You'll hav...

Rush Hour Reads: May 2013
http://rushhourreads.blogspot.com/2013_05_01_archive.html
A quest for the best commuting reads. Wednesday, 29 May 2013. Who Will Run The Frog Hospital? I've mentioned before my penchant for a sad tale. So, in seeking inspiration for a tale of heartbreak, I Googled this very theme and the title that caught my eye was this one by Lorrie Moore. Although I'm not sure it met my initial brief (my heartstrings were left largely untugged), I did find this an intriguing tale of growing up and growing apart. Wednesday, May 29, 2013. Labels: coming of age. In my view, Jil...
Rush Hour Reads: Perfect
http://rushhourreads.blogspot.com/2014/01/perfect.html
A quest for the best commuting reads. Friday, 10 January 2014. Before I start, I have to confess that Rachel Joyce's hit novel, The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry. Is one that hasn't made it onto my to-read so I can't make comparisons. Which is probably no bad thing. I opened Perfect. With no preconceptions and I was greeted with a haunting tale of class, broken dreams and how the course of our lives can change in the blink of an eye. Available in hardback, paperback and Kindle edition from Amazon.
Rush Hour Reads: The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared
http://rushhourreads.blogspot.com/2013/08/the-hundred-year-old-man-who-climbed.html
A quest for the best commuting reads. Monday, 12 August 2013. The Hundred-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared. Following last month's review of Gone Girl. I decided I really ought to tackle more of the "everyone's read it" books lurking on my Kindle. So, after a few months on the to do list, it was time to delve into the Hundred-Year-Old Man. This was my first foray into the world of Swedish literature and my, what a strange tale! It is a great bit of escapism and does require the ...
Rush Hour Reads: The Summer We All Ran Away
http://rushhourreads.blogspot.com/2013/10/the-summer-we-all-ran-away.html
A quest for the best commuting reads. Tuesday, 29 October 2013. The Summer We All Ran Away. Looking back I can't quite remember what caught my eye about Cassandra Parkin's debut novel. I guess the title captured a certain end of season whimsy that echoed my own memories of the fast fading summer as the leaves turn golden on the trees. Whatever it was, I'm glad I did, as this proved a great read with accomplished story telling - I was truly gripped from the off. This was a very atmospheric read, full of w...

Thursday, 13 August 2015. Black Eyed Susans by Julia Heaberlin. A couple of months back I was thrilled to attend the UK Black Eyed Susans event and got to meet the lovely author herself. As I knew the book wasn’t due for release until this month, I saved it until now, although once I started it, I finished it in almost one whole sitting! I think the use of such a vibrant yet creepily-named flower as the icon for the crimes in this book was sheer genius (and the cover looks great! There are parts about th...
