Staring out of windows

Staring out of windows. Thoughts and stories from the road. Wednesday, February 3, 2010. I'm kind of stumped. I've never been shy in my use of superlatives on this trip, and I've certainly been in place after place that deserved every one of them. It leaves me with a bit of a challenge, albeit a jolly one: how exactly to get my head or my keyboard around the amazingness of the last month? Miraculous. Like standing at the airport in the cool Malian December night waiting for your love to step off a pl...

Staring out of windows: Togo-riffic

http://www.bootsandabackpack.blogspot.com/2009/12/togo-riffic.html

Staring out of windows. Thoughts and stories from the road. Tuesday, December 1, 2009. The joys of Togo start with the border crossing. Having used my talent for tracking down obscure crossing points, I hopped from Ghana to Togo in the extreme north of both countries, not far from the Burkinabé border. The Togolese border post? A rather jolly little man sitting under a tree. He had the requisite stamps, though, and with zero muss, I was through. With things to see that I could have done in a day or two, ...

Staring out of windows: Mmmmmmm!

http://www.bootsandabackpack.blogspot.com/2009/11/mmmmmmm.html

Staring out of windows. Thoughts and stories from the road. Saturday, November 21, 2009. So, food. I love food. I love food even more when missing some of the other creature comforts (having more than 3 shirts, functioning toilets, or temperatures under 35). To a budget traveller food is a lifeline served up in shacks by the roadside. There are, of course, tons of regional specialties. Senegal goes in for Thibou Djienne, a super yummy fish and veggie mix with the rice steamed in the sauce. mmm! Yam chips...

Staring out of windows: Yuletidin'

Staring out of windows. Thoughts and stories from the road. Thursday, December 24, 2009. Spending Christmas in Burkina Faso, amongst the bottom 5 countries on earth by almost any measure of human welfare, just begs for a cliche-laden blog post about the obscenity of our Christmas materialism. I thought about writing that. I certainly often find Christmas obscene. The funny thing is, though, that now is not the time at which I find the contrast most jarring. That's not to say that Christmas itself is view...

Staring out of windows: Whoodoo? Youdoo?

http://www.bootsandabackpack.blogspot.com/2009/12/whoodoo-youdoo.html

Staring out of windows. Thoughts and stories from the road. Saturday, December 19, 2009. Benin is generally a tidy country. It's very visibly richer than Togo, and has such things - real sidewalks, public squares! Well worth it, though - I've rarely felt as honestly admitted into local culture as I did then. And so ended my Benin experience - vodun dancing, snake eating (tastes like chicken! Cafe-sitting, and all. For a place I had few expectations of, it worked out to be a real highlight of this trip.

42.6: A Long Way Wrong?

http://fortytwopointsix.blogspot.com/2009/11/long-way-wrong.html

Musings from my time as a Radio Journalism Trainer in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. Monday, November 23, 2009. A Long Way Wrong? Before I left for Sierra Leone, I read Ishmael Beah's memoir A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. About his experiences in the country's decade-long civil war. At the time, I posted a blog entry. Addressing the controversy that had emerged around the accuracy of the memoir, concluding that I wasn't especially concerned if every minute detail was precise. When Muctar d...

Musings from my time as a Radio Journalism Trainer in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. Thursday, June 25, 2009. Josh Smyth distracts you from my colossal failures. As some of you may have noticed, I've been about as M.I.A. as Mathangi Arulpragasam. Lately, and for that I apologize. The irony that my blog frequency has rapidly decreased. Now that I have steady access to electricity and fast Internet is certainly not lost on me. One of the smartest and most interesting men K-W can ever lay claim to. The p...

Musings from my time as a Radio Journalism Trainer in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. Sunday, December 14, 2008. My Salone music initiation. In my first week in Freetown, I noticed banners throughout the city advertising a major musical competition entitled "Who is Who? Back in mid-October, they didn't indicate a date, but ever since I eventually learned it would be held on December 12, it's been a night I've been anxiously awaiting. A sad indication of Canada's most famous exports. We reached the tick...

Musings from my time as a Radio Journalism Trainer in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. Wednesday, March 18, 2009. Trip of a lifetime. And I'm back. I arrived home to Freetown two nights ago after an absolutely exhausting yet intensely rewarding vacation to Guinea and Liberia. I would be remiss to even attempt to fully encapsulate the awesomeness of this experience. But here's a taste. In the past 2.5 weeks, I have:. Bossou, Seredou, Macenta. Dalaba, Doucki, and Pita). The country's highest peak. 5 Track...

42.6: Tell me to shut up

http://fortytwopointsix.blogspot.com/2009/05/tell-me-to-shut-up.html

Musings from my time as a Radio Journalism Trainer in Sierra Leone's capital, Freetown. Thursday, May 28, 2009. Tell me to shut up. I'll be home in two weeks. This is clearly exciting. But a small part of me is also a tad nervous about the repatriation process. You see, I've heard quite a lot about 'reverse culture shock' - how difficult it can be to return to one's original society after spending time abroad under vastly different circumstances. But my Toronto boss, Carissa, confided over dinner a coupl...

A postcard from Uganda: July 2009

http://postikadi.blogspot.com/2009_07_01_archive.html

A postcard from Uganda. Saturday, July 18, 2009. 27 blog posts and 10 weeks later. I've been back in Canada for a couple days now and I'm still fighting off the jet lag. It's noon here in Oshawa but in Arua it's 7pm and that means supper time. Back upstairs I went. I went out into the fresh air to search for a taxi only to discover that it would cost nearly $200 to bring me to my hostel. Not a chance! Another thought crossed my mind: "What if I just went home? Of course, I took it. Luckily the 4am phone ...

The Highlands

Thursday, February 19, 2009. Blue Passion to Remember. The Highland household has been full of projects the past two months. They're still making "tweaks" to it, but it's pretty well finished. In the middle of that, I made plans for us to attend the Family Life Conference: "Weekend to Remember" at the Gaylord Texan over Valentine's weekend. In preparation for that, I had my hair 'did' BLUE. not completely, just a bit of a peekaboo blue. We connected with a few of the speakers: the main guy Dennis Rainey,...

Tuesday, July 5, 2011. Holy Six Months, Batman! I haven't gotten around to taking Claire's six month pictures yet, but I know if I don't get this post up now, it'll probably never happen. This has been the fastest-passing six months of my entire life. It's like Claire was born and I blinked and now she's half a year old. Good grief.she is such a joy to Devin and I. Pears and green beans. So far, those are her favorites. When we first started with avocado, she really liked it, but now that she's t...I've ...
