Display-TAN is a joint development of SmartDisplayer Inc., Taiwan, Univ. Tübingen, Germany, and Borchert IT-Sicherheit UG, Germany. We are an active group of Computer Scientists at Tübingen University researching since 2006 about the security of Internet authentications, see for example this list of finished diploma theses. In 2008 we suggested Smartphone-TAN and built a prototype - that time with J2ME, see this Handelsblatt article from 2008 (pdf). From 2010 to 2012 NFC-TAN.

A valid TAN can only generated if the money transfer data are transmitted to the bank card where they are securely visualized to the bank customer, confirmed, and finally signed via the secret key stored on the bank card. Up to 8 ten-digit lines can be shown to the user on the card, in a successive way. For example a German IBAN like DE41 6039 1310 0757 2920 01 could be shown in 3 lines (with 3 OKs by the user) as DE41 first (country code and check sum), then 6039 1310 (bank number) and 0757 2920 01 (account number):. This page is a short - but nevertheless complete - description of the Display-TAN interface between bank server/smartphone and card. The spec/interface of Display-TAN Version 2. Including encryption, login, respresentation of capital letters, etc. is available. The general protocol is the following. Both smartphone and card are sending BLE signals that they are ready. Then the bank server sends via smartphone to the card the query C A N. And will send it to the smartphone as an 8-digit string.
