Funky16Corners: April 2005
http://funky16corners.blogspot.com/2005_04_01_archive.html
I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Friday, April 22, 2005. Leon Haywood - Rivers Invitation. Is a familiar name to soul fans, mainly for his work as a vocalist. His mid-60’s hit on Decca, ‘It’s Got To Be Mellow’. Is a sweet soul classic. What’s less familiar (and in many ways better) is his work as an instrumentalist. Haywood (who was born in Texas but did most of his recording on the West coast) started out playing in Sam Cooke’s. And Dyke and The Blazers. On Fat Fish, ‘ Soul On’.

I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Thursday, March 31, 2005. The Four Larks - Rain. Someday I’m going to find the missing links in the puzzle and put together a long form article on Philadelphia’s Harthon. Label A cooperative effort between Weldon McDougal, Luther Randolph and Johnny Styles. Made Harthon a force to be reckoned with (and a major force on Northern Soul playlists). One of the best remembered groups from the Harthon stable was The Four Larks. The Four Larks 45s are so...

Funky16Corners: June 2005

I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Wednesday, June 29, 2005. Betty Everett - It's Getting Mighty Crowded. The first time I ever heard ‘It’s Getting Mighty Crowded’ was as a teenager, hearing it performed by Elvis Costello. It was years before I realized that his revved up version was a cover of an old soul 45. I’m ashamed to admit that for the longest time, I turned the dial whenever I heard Betty Everett. That tune ranks for me along with Fontella Bass’s ‘Rescue Me’. This was a g...

I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Tuesday, May 31, 2005. Johnny Adams - South Side of Soul Street. For years I only knew Johnny Adams by his epic version of ‘Release Me’. One of the great ballad records to come out of New Orleans. Known as the ‘Tan Canary’. Adams took the country classic and added a deep soulfulness and a generous helping of vocal filigree and came within a hairs breadth of over the topness’. If I had to compare it to another record I’d point to Joe Hinton’s.

I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Wednesday, January 19, 2005. Don Gardner - My Baby Likes To Boogaloo b/w Inaugural Malaise. Okay The inauguration (er, coronation) of Bush the Younger. Approaches rapidly, ripping the already tenuous scab that took forever to form after the tragic. Don Gardner’s ‘My Baby Likes To Boogaloo’. As well as a pile of his own 45’s. ‘My Baby Likes To Boogaloo’, on the New Jersey (hiyooooooo! Posted by Larry Grogan at 1/19/2005 01:22:00 PM. My initial exp...

I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Wednesday, December 22, 2004. Maurice and The Radiants - Baby You've Got It. Maurice McAlister and Mac McLauren. Patti and the Emblems. Had a great record on Herald called ‘ The Sound Of Music Makes Me Wanna Dance’. On a mid-80s compilation of tunes by UK 60’s mod band the Action. That band made covering great (but obscure) US soul records something of a cottage industry ( see my man Bill Luther’s article on the subject. Among others) and a pulsi...

I Popcorn for fun, and I'm second to none" - Lou Courtney. Tuesday, February 22, 2005. Well, shit on that dumbness. George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn't vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today - and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever. " - Hunter S. Thompson. Not just good, but truly great. His talent was (at least for me) awe inspiring. He was a polymath wit...Is a ...
