Wildflowers Monday – Jeffersonia diphylla – Botanically Inclined – Seed Adventures
http://botanicallyinclined.org/jeffersonia-diphylla-twinleaf
Wildflowers of North America. Wildflowers Monday – Jeffersonia diphylla. May 18, 2015. In Wildflowers of North America. Jeffersonia diphylla Twinleaf, Rheumatism root (Fam. Berberidaceae). It is easily distinguished by the bluish-green two-lobed leaves that gave both its Latin and common names. Think of them as green butterflies topped up in the spring by large white flowers resembling those of the bloodroot (Sanguinaria canadensis). Awesome combination! Named in honour of US President Thomas Jefferson, ...

Wildflowers of North America. Cuteness alert Clinopodium arkansanum. August 11, 2016. Wildflowers of North America. Limestone calamint (syn. Calamintha, Satureja). Some may have noticed that I’m in love with little plants; I like them even more when they are fragrant! Clinopodium arkansanum – Limestone calamint. Will release an aromatic minty wave into the air; also an ID help when not in flower 😉. Fortunately, I managed to collect a few this time! Too cute not to have it! August 3, 2016. Salvia vertici...

In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Welcome to my yard, leafcutter bee!
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2014/06/welcome-to-my-yard-leafcutter-bee.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Sunday, June 22, 2014. Welcome to my yard, leafcutter bee! Entrance to nest is in the end of the shorter tie. The leaf fragments this bee brought back were larger than the ones I saw last time, and she had to fold them to carry them. From Leafcutter Bees Fact Sheet. Colorado State University Extension. But I think these holes are too small. They may be the work of leafcutter bees, but apparently not the one I was watching. Do you recognize the bee’s leaf? It has serrat...
In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Winter Tree Following: cottonwood, juniper, willow
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2015/03/winter-tree-following-cottonwood.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Saturday, March 7, 2015. Winter Tree Following: cottonwood, juniper, willow. Cottonwood twigs collected in January are leafing out – indoors. In the wild, leaves won't appear until late May. It’s time to part with my cottonwood. I was searching for a suitable juniper in the foothills just east of town. They’re common, especially on rockier slopes and in draws. We walked up a small dry draw with a box canyon at the head. Rocky Mountain juniper, Juniperus scopulorum.
In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Water! (tree following in July)
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2015/07/water-tree-following-in-july.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Tuesday, July 7, 2015. Tree following in July). We’re having a wet summer here in normally-sunny Wyoming. Field botanists sit in soggy tents, waiting. Fire lookouts sit in their towers reading book after book in fog, mist and rain. Impassable dirt roads stay impassible as plants grow, bloom and go to seed, unobserved. I come home to a yard that's a jungle and too wet to mow except that. This no longer applies. I’m retired. But I haven’t forgotten. We reached Willow Can...
In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Welcome, bees! ... please make yourselves at home
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2015/08/welcome-bees-please-make-yourselves-at.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Tuesday, August 4, 2015. Please make yourselves at home. I’m thrilled that my lilacs have scalloped leaves. It means leafcutter bees are building nurseries, where their eggs will overwinter (and the bees don’t hurt the bushes). Arrows point to bee hangouts. This year a leafcutter bee is using the same crack in a railroad tie that served as a nursery last year. Females live on the order of two months according to the leafcutter bee fact sheet. What about its siblings?

In the Company of Plants and Rocks: October 2014
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Friday, October 31, 2014. On the Road: Final Geo-challenge. What's all that weird orange rock? Maybe I was out too long. Is back from vacation, with one more geo-challenge to share. But I had to wait until today. To post it (hint). It was a land of strange and eerie rock creatures – hundreds of them! Those in the prime of life were spooky . But the old and dying evoked sympathy. Though made of rock, their lives are short. Where on Google Earth? Monday, October 27, 2014.

In the Company of Plants and Rocks: Stuck – in a Land of Flat Plants
http://plantsandrocks.blogspot.com/2015/07/stuck-in-land-of-flat-plants.html
In the Company of Plants and Rocks. Thursday, July 23, 2015. Stuck – in a Land of Flat Plants. Plant specimens waiting to be shelved for posterity. Lucy Corrander says it’s time for the next stuck-foot gathering. I like being in the herbarium. Rather I was “stuck” as directed. But not randomly . sorry, Lucy). 8220;plant your foot firmly in a roughly random place and see what you can see without moving. Best is when you plant both feet.”. BotanicallyBrewed | Yeah, so what?
Yeah, so what? Ldf11 (or in normal people speak: London Design Festival 2011). September 30, 2011. So, it was London Design Festival 2011. Last week. Seven days of innovative design, outstanding manufacturing techniques, beautiful architecture and pretentious bollocks. Take, for example, the above. It’s an exhaust pipe, that much I know, but what exactly is it that we’re supposed to admire about this particular piece? Is it the welding? Is it the fact that the fat end looks a bit like a shark?
