Black Sun: A Right Charlie
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-right-charlie.html
Tuesday, May 05, 2015. It is clear and inarguable that the January slaughter of 10 Charlie Hebdo staff members as well as 2 policemen in the Charlie Hebdo offices is sickening and tragic. What is neither clear nor inarguable is the decision to confer an award for courageous freedom of expression on Charlie Hebdo, or what criteria, exactly were used to make that decision. Indeed, the matter is fraught, complex, and very troubling. The whole letter can be read here. Biard, from Charlie Hebdo. A way of life.

Black Sun: Afterwards
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/freud-has-wonderful-word-afterwardness.html
Monday, May 04, 2015. You open a book and the sun is there, there on the pages before your eyes:. The summer was too long. Lay now thy shadow over the sundials,.'. The faint, blue hour of early morning, your head full of many thoughts, some sad, some profound, carried over from the night, but as the light clears and the hours strike, all evaporates. Afterwards, you wonder to yourself, what was that but a smudge of. Understanding. And now the day will play out with all that is half-remembered.

Black Sun: Life
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/life.html
Wednesday, May 13, 2015. To fall in love with a film on the basis of a few scenes? Can a few 'stills' be so. So jewel-like that the failings of life can be overlooked? An old religious problem: to what extent do representations take us way from life; to what degree do they throw light on it? Occupation is elsewhere. But how to make a film about life, the living.except by talking about death. There is no heroic striving for immortality. The main protagonist of the film devotes himself to his work (which i...

Black Sun: In memory
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/in-memory.html
Monday, May 04, 2015. 8220;A week or two after we entered the Gaza Strip and we were all firing a lot when there wasn’t any need for it – just for the sake of firing – a member of our company was killed. 8220;The company commander came over to us and told us that one guy was killed due to such-and-such, and he said: ‘Guys, get ready, get in your tanks, and we’ll fire a barrage in memory of our comrade” …. They started it, we don't now care whose dead. You're dead. You deserve to be dead. The year draws t...

Black Sun: A way of life
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-way-of-life.html
Sunday, May 10, 2015. A way of life. British higher education has developed an elaborate auditing culture that has led academics to devoting themselves to gaming the system, distorting their output – such as publishing essentially the same article in different venues, the devaluation of books, creating and attracting academic celebrities to boost RAE ratings. Perhaps the most debilitating consequence has been the shortening of time horizons of research, so that it becomes ever more superficial. Style of ...

Black Sun: Losing my religion
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/losing-my-religion.html
Sunday, May 17, 2015. Losing too is still ours; and even forgetting. Still has a shape in the kingdom of transformation. When something's let go of, it circles ; and though. Of the circle, it draws around us its unbroken, marvelous. If one can survive today without questioning too much, without being questioned, that is saying a lot. But what would it mean to lose one's faith, slowly, out of the limelight.with a whimper, not a bang? There is no depth to the world in the summer light. The shadows timi...

Black Sun: From Russia, with love
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/from-russia-with-love.html
Thursday, May 14, 2015. From Russia, with love. But still, the question is, what should we remain alive for? This reminded me of Solzhenitsyn's insightful and acerbic Harvard address, way back when. The constant desire to have still more things and a still better life. imprints many Western faces with worry and even depression.Active and tense competition permeates all human thoughts without opening a way to free spiritual development.'. Everyone is entitled to know everything." But this is a false s...

Black Sun: The end of the Dream
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-end-of-dream.html
Thursday, May 07, 2015. The end of the Dream. The end of red, like so many other things, passing without being noticed. We will look back and wonder to ourselves: was this just a dream? Not just our own lives-which is mysterious enough-but the ideas and ideals that we once cherished. The disappearance of religion, for instance, replaced by what.a vague memory of beauty (or perhaps savagery and institutional repression)? New things come along and sometimes others are re-born, but it's never quite the same.

Black Sun: The state we're in
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/the-charm-effect.html
Wednesday, May 06, 2015. The state we're in. The Britain I love – an outward-looking country that is tolerant, good-humoured, fair-minded and generous, and which, with some reforms, could become one of the most dynamic places to live in Europe. Will Hutton is a really sensible writer (his book, Us and Them. Is a fantastic survey of ideas relating to fairness and why they're crucially important to our understanding of what constitutes a good society). But here's the incredible bit: "with some reforms"....

Black Sun: nothing, nowt, nada, zilch, sifr
http://bagginsandco.blogspot.com/2015/05/nowt.html
Sunday, May 03, 2015. Nothing, nowt, nada, zilch, sifr. Nothing is always growing; that, too, is a growing (agrowing). My drift in the world, my. All the deaths carried forward in the human species, all the memories of other lives. Continental drift, fault lines, the distances between us grow. And still, after all these years we think there was a time-the origin maybe-when there was a kind of oneness. What will become of me,. The cornerstones of my heart bring about nothing'. The sun shall cover us.
