The Last Laugh by Wilfred Owen. I’m hit,’ he said; and died. Whether he vainly cursed or prayed indeed,. The Bullets chirped-In vain, vain, vain! And the Big Gun guffawed. Another sighed,-‘O Mother, -Mother, – Dad! Then smiled at nothing, childlike, being dead. And the lofty Shrapnel-cloud. And the splinters spat, and tittered. 8217; one moaned. Love-languid seemed his mood,. Till slowly lowered, his whole faced kissed the mud. And the Bayonets’ long teeth grinned;. Rabbles of Shells hooted and groaned;.

Monthly Archives: March 2013. The poem is built up on a number of paradoxes. These include ‘cold heaven’ ‘burning ice’ and ‘riddling ice’. It gains intensity by putting together paradoxes, the clash of insight and bewilderment. The poem discusses the lonely ghost roads of sexual purgatory due to the loss of Maude Gonne’s love. It links with his love affair with Maude Gonne and how he has never managed to get over her. He is asking himself and the reader weather there is any meaning in life. March 20, 2013.

The soldier’s fate was decided in the battlefield like a cattle’s would be when they are ready to get slaughtered. Owen questions why there was no proper funeral for each soldier that had died.
