Brain Today: Is Memory Loss Normal as You Age?
http://www.braintoday.com/2011/03/is-memory-loss-normal-as-you-age.html
Clarifying the daily news about brain health. Is Memory Loss Normal as You Age? Contributed by: Dennis Fortier, President,. Is it normal to have memory loss as you age? This is a question I see posed on a regular basis in the press. It is clearly a topic of intense interest to the aging population, and it is worthy of a careful answer. As a starting point, it is useful to consider the three component parts of human memory:. It is never normal to experience severe or sudden changes in memory capacity....

Clarifying the daily news about brain health. Perspective on "A Cure for Alzheimer's". Contributed by: Dennis Fortier, President,. Sometimes the facts are very misleading. For some reason, when Alzheimer's Disease is discussed in the popular press, the discussion often includes a reference to the fact that "there is no cure" for this disease. This is a true statement, but somewhat misleading. To be clear, everyone would love to have a cure for Alzheimer's. It would greatly improve the world and elimi...

Clarifying the daily news about brain health. Your Brain on Green Spaces. Contributed by: Dennis Fortier, President,. Lot's of things that seem obvious, turn out to be either counter-intuitive, or surprisingly complex. For this reason, we often apply scientific methods to "obvious questions". It is a means of verifying that our expectations are actually grounded in fact. A recent study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine. Posted by Dennis Fortier. Clarifying the daily news about brain health. Alzheimer's Cure by 2025: An Unnecessary Goal? Contributed by: Dennis Fortier, President,. The National Alzheimer's Prevention Act, signed into law one year ago, calls for a national strategy for defeating this terrible disease. A late-stage draft of the strategy sets a goal to develop a cure by the year 2025. While many have suggested a timeline with more urgency, say by 2020, others have suggested that this timeline is too ambitious. Perhaps of greater impo...

Clarifying the daily news about brain health. Screening for Cognitive Impairment. Contributed by: Dennis Fortier, President, Medical Care Corporation. Yesterday, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) ruled that there is insufficient evidence to make a recommendation, either for or against, routine screening for cognitive impairment in older adults. Today, the press is ablaze with sloppy reporting on the matter. Many news stories (like this from US News and World Report. Rather, the public sh...

Random babblings from the mind of Emily: A little behind (like any kind of behind has only been little around here)
http://blueyedmle.blogspot.com/2010/01/little-behind-like-any-kind-of-behind.html
Saturday, January 9, 2010. A little behind (like any kind of behind has only been little around here). Next, the fun stuff. For those of you wondering how I ended up having surgery so quickly. Here's a quick little overview of Cancer Watch 2009-2010. Last summer my OBGYN suggested I go visit an endocrinologist because of one (just one) hormone that was outta range. October, I finally got into see said endocrinologist. (Waiting list cause he is good.). Christmas Eve, I was told:. I dropped off all the not...
Random babblings from the mind of Emily: A cancer by any other name....
http://blueyedmle.blogspot.com/2010/01/cancer-by-any-other-name.html
Saturday, January 16, 2010. A cancer by any other name. I saw the surgeon yesterday. I keep thinking each visit will bring answers, unfortunately with every answer, more unknowns show up. The tumor was a Medullary Carcinoma. It is very rare. The results took so long because the slides had to be sent to a specialist at the Mayo in Rochester. I feel pretty special knowing that part of me has now visited Minnesota. (And I didn't even get any pictures! Well, I will never be normal no matter how hard I try!
Random babblings from the mind of Emily: Where have all the bad asses gone?
http://blueyedmle.blogspot.com/2010/01/where-have-all-bad-asses-gone.html
Sunday, January 31, 2010. Where have all the bad asses gone? I came from the generation where any teenager that had a car, had the bumper sticker saying, "QUESTION AUTHORITY". I think we all thought we were tough stuff, that we knew more than those trying to teach something in the school where we parked our car. The sad truth is: for all of us sporting this bold statement of defiance, we sure missed out on its true meaning. There is power in questioning authority. There is a sense of responsibility i...

Clarifying the daily news about brain health. SAGE: A short test for detecting Alzheimer's? Contributed by: Dennis Fortier, President, Medical Care Corporation. The Self-Administered Gerocognitive Examination (SAGE) has received a fair amount of attention this year. Most of the attention has been driven by PR efforts and a website. braintofingers | This is all the stuff that happens in my brain, translated to my fingers.
This is all the stuff that happens in my brain, translated to my fingers. It’s Not Her, It’s You. October 27, 2014. Mama, what wrong with me? Why does nobody want to be my friend? This is what my 5 year old asked me when we were driving, as her sister napped beside her in the van. Why would a 5 year old ask such a thing? I had to explain to her that there is nothing wrong with her. I didn’t explain to her that despite her diagnoses, people don’t believe me when I tell them. She is not 8 or neurotypical.
