Wildlife in an Oxfordshire village. Laquo; On schedule. A good year for solitary bees? Well, so far anyway. The Tawny mining bees (Andrena fulva). Emerged from the lawn, creating the usual mini-volcanoes, a couple of weeks ago, and they have now been joined by Red mason bees (Osmia bicornis),. Early mining bees (Andrena haemorrhoa),. Update – I gather this is A. nitida not A. haemorrhoa]. Chocolate mining bees (Andrena carantonica),. Grey mining bees (Andrena cineraria),. With tags "mining bees".

Wildlife in an Oxfordshire village. Laquo; Winter Blackcaps. This year’s Scarlet Tigers. I’ve been keeping an eye on the local scarlet tiger moth colony for a few years now, and last year. I collated the dates that the larvae and adults emerged. Except for the very cold spring of 2013 they are quite consistent – caterpillars mid to late March, moths early to mid June. The Butts Piece Scarlet Tiger Moth colony produced a good crop of caterpillars in April, and as expected the adults are starting to appear:. Here’s a graph showing the emergence of larvae and adults over the last few years: it’s not altogether scientific as my observations are weekly at best, but it certainly shows the impact of last year’s cold spring. This year’s rain does not seem to have affected the timing. With tags "scarlet tiger".

This is looking like a “normal” Spring (if there is such a thing), with chiffchaffs, blackthorn blossom and tawny mining bees all appearing as usual. Over-wintering butterflies have emerged. But there have been a couple of surprises: Small White butterflies usually appear in May, but quite a few are already in evidence. Has revealed that, while blackcaps seen in the UK in the summer migrate south for the winter, others, after spending the summer in central Europe, head for British bird-tables in the winter. Weather was very much the same as yesterday with a strong SW blowing and heavy seas so a non-birding excursion off island was in order to Lulworth Cove and Durdle Dor.
